Non-profit Organizations
Gambling with Lives is a charity that was set up by families and friends bereaved by gambling-related suicide.
About us
We are a community of families bereaved by gambling-related suicide that raises awareness of the devastating effects of gambling disorder & campaigns for change The deaths of our loved ones were very sudden – “out of the blue” with no warning. They were not the result of massive gambling debts, rather what gambling had done to their hearts and their heads. We’re starting to get evidence from neuroscience that gambling on electronic machines affects mental health and even creates suicidal thoughts. Our children had all struggled with their gambling addiction for years, often being clear for many months at a time … but always dragged back in by an industry offering “free bets” and other give-aways. They all felt that they could never break free. No one knows exactly how many deaths there are related to gambling each year; research indicates that there may be between 250 and 650 gambling-related suicides every year in the UK … a minimum of one every working day. Gambling with Lives aims to: • Support families who have been bereaved by gambling related suicides • Raise awareness amongst gamblers, their families and friends, and health professionals of the dangerous effects of gambling on mental health, and the high suicide risk In support of these aims, we will also seek to: • Reduce gambling-related harm by supporting better regulation of gambling products which lead to an increased risk of gambling addiction and adverse effects on health • Promote the treatment of gambling as a health issue which requires improved access to health services integrated with the NHS, and access to support for families and friends • Give a voice to families and friends bereaved by gambling and bring the health issues surrounding gambling to the attention of policy makers and bodies responsible for regulating the gambling industry

"Nobody seemed to be bothered that my son had taken his life” For my friends and colleagues interested in #suicide prevention and/or research. Please take a look at this groundbreaking report from Gambling with Lives and the Voicing Loss project on the experiences of families bereaved by gambling-related suicide during the inquest process. I had a short but very sweet time working at GwL - they are a wonderful and utterly dedicated bunch. I am so delighted to see the fruits of their tireless efforts published today in this really powerful piece of work. Please read and share widely!

The role of coroners are little understood. Perhaps at least in part due to widespread discomfort at thinking about a service no-one ever wants to need. In the summer, Birkbeck, University of London & University of Bath published a groundbreaking series of reports, ‘Voicing Loss’, on the experience of bereaved people, including families of an inquest. See an earlier post below. This week a follow-up paper is published. It focuses on concerns about gaps in inquests where gambling is involved in a suicide. ‘A coroner’s inquest happens when chaos is in your brain, turmoil is in your heart’: father, Lee Fryatt. New research recently revealed the psychological toll for bereaved families involved in coroners’ inquests. It’s the largest ever study of bereaved people’s experiences of the inquest process in England and Wales and is published by Birkbeck, University of London and University of Bath The three- year study (led Prof Jessica Jacobson) found worrying levels of trauma & distress for many families after interviews with 89 bereaved people. Some compared the trauma of the inquest to the distress caused by the death itself. That finding alone is haunting. In my capacity as an independent consultant I led the media campaign to raise awareness of the hidden world of inquests & their impact on grieving families. Though open to journalists & public, coroners courts are little understood or visited, feeding into the bewilderment many families felt when catapulted into an alien process. Lee Fryatt whose son Daniel took his own life at uni, featured on BBC. It’s with a sense of pride - & relief given the election & Euros- that I reflect on widespread media coverage. BBC, The Law Gazette THE JUSTICE GAP LTD Evening Standard even overseas in The Canadian Press Canadian Lawyer- well worth a read. I was struck by how most journalists reporting the story had personal experience of inquests. They know they’re important but some told me they were also baffled by their workings. We struggle as a society to talk about death. Though an uncomfortable discussion it’s a service needing more, not less media attention, public understanding & debate about funding. Lee Fryatt told of deep frustration & pain that lessons weren’t being learnt from deaths. He called it a ‘systemic failing’ & wants to see the power of coroners beefed up so they have the authority to prevent future deaths. ‘The prevention of future deaths notice sent to public bodies and health authorities to guard against repeated failings might as well be thrown in the bin. They’re a false promise and a missed opportunity. The inquest, frankly, made our situation even worse. This study shows many other families share that experience.’ Lee is a former police officer himself, he knows how inquests could work much better for families. Do check out the full study & info on the Voicing Loss website too. With thanks to INQUEST for your support for families going through the coronial process. Thank you Catherine Fookes MP for highlighting these alarming figures. We agree 100% – gambling must be treated as a public health issue. #StopGamblingSuicides
