The role airports play in the UK economy was a key topic at  AirportsUK annual conference yesterday. Aviation Minister Mike Kane MP echoed that message saying if Britain is to grow, airports need to grow, as well as emphasising jobs in aviation are crucial to their local communities. I was joined by Nick Barton, Birmingham Airport CEO and Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport CEO to discuss the industry in 2024 and what the priorities are for airports going into 2025, under a new government. We discussed what the key challenges facing the industry are, but also the unique opportunities to deliver sustainable economic growth all over the country. This included our plan at London Gatwick to bring our Northern Runway into routine use and grow our passengers to 75 million. It’s clear that increased capacity is the key to unlocking economic growth: it means more connectivity, more travel, more trade, more tourism.

Being the airport for everyone, whatever their journey This Disability History Month, Able2, London Gatwick’s disability Business Resource Group, has organised a series of impactful events to celebrate and support disabled colleagues and passengers. As the Executive Sponsor of Able2, I am incredibly proud of the work that has gone into making this month a success, but also of the strides we are making towards inclusivity and accessibility more widely at our airport. It was a privilege to open an event earlier this week, including a colleague panel discussion, a keynote presentation from Dr Shani Dhanda and a talk about health and wellbeing benefits on offer at London Gatwick. The event featured discussions around a wide range of topics like mental health, neurodiversity, physical disabilities, and people with caring responsibilities.  This history month is also a great time for us to reflect on the last year, which has included launching new AccessAble guides, expanding engagement with the Independent Gatwick Accessibility Panel, and London Gatwick becoming the first UK airport to receive the ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation (Level 1). It was also fantastic to see that London Gatwick’s Accessibility Manager and co-chair of Able2, Anna-Ruth Cockerham, was named on the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100, recognising her as one of the most influential disabled people in the UK. These achievements are testament to our commitment to being the airport for everyone, whatever their journey. I’m honoured to be a part of this journey, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with Able2 to make London Gatwick a more inclusive and accessible place for all.
