✅ Today at COP29 Azerbaijan we launched our international definitions for low carbon cement and concrete! https://bit.ly/4fUogOf 🌱 We were delighted to have German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck join us for the launch. He said: “This is a big step forward towards delivering a greener built environment and global economy. Low carbon public procurement is an important component of the policy landscape to support decarbonisation of sectors such as cement and concrete. When Germany held the Presidency of the G7, IEA were commissioned to evaluate low and near zero cement production. We are delighted that this work has been built upon by the GCCA to publish low carbon and near zero definitions for cement and concrete products. “As co-chair of the International Climate Club initiative with Chile, we continue to facilitate multilateral collaboration and alignment on sustainable procurement.” The definitions are seen as crucial to providing a key reference point for anyone that wants to be able to identify and buy green cement and concrete across the world. The GCCA definitions are designed to be used at national and sub national level with local current data and local targets overlaid. If local practice for Co2 footprinting differs for the global EPD assumptions then the GCCA definitions can be locally adapted whilst retaining global consistency. See the definitions here: https://bit.ly/3Z1fd7I 🌱 We were also pleased to be joined by: · Dr. Beate Baron, German Director-General for Industry, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action · Emna Bchir, Co-Director of the Sustainability Commission, UIA - International Union of Architects · Sanjay Seth, Senior Director – Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute & Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, GRIHA Council · Alice de Moraes Amorim Vogas, Extraordinary Advisory for COP30 - Brazil · Thomas Guillot, CEO, GCCA · Dr Andrew Minson, Concrete and Sustainable Construction Director, GCCA · Paul Adeleke, Strategy, Communications & Policy Director, GCCA #LowCarbon #LowCarbonConcrete #CementIndustry #GreenBuilding #GreenConstruction

The trusted, authoritative global voice for the cement and concrete sector.
About us
The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) is the global voice for cement and concrete - the most widely used man-made product on the planet. The GCCA and its members are committed to promoting the unique properties of concrete as a sustainable, durable and resilient building material – a material that will answer the needs of a growing and increasingly urban population that is set to exceed 9 billion people by 2050. The GCCA’s authoritative voice will help ensure that the prevailing views of cement and concrete are holistic and based on robust evidence. Alongside this global advocacy role, the GCCA will gather and publish data against the industry’s sustainability commitments as well as develop member guidelines and initiate research. This is being supported by the transfer of the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) activities to the GCCA under the strategic partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The GCCA work programme is organised along three dimensions: sustainability, innovation and the positioning of concrete. Sustainable development of our industry is at the very core of the GCCA’s work and has five pillars: safety & health, climate change & energy, social responsibility, environment & nature and circular economy. We want to drive responsible industry leadership in the manufacture and use of cement and concrete. We will strive to improve the global social and environmental impact of the sector’s activities and products. We aim to foster innovation and collaboration with industry associations and inspiring architects, engineers and innovators across the globe and along the length of the built-environment value chain. Concrete is more than a building material. It provides homes, it connects communities, it encourages trade, it provides energy, it improves health, it broadens minds.

It's great to see discussions on how stronger international collaboration can speed up industrial decarbonisation by senior leaders from the #Cement and #Concrete Breakthrough. We were happy to see support for the launch of our international definitions for #LowCarbon cement and concrete. #COP29 #COP30 #BreakthroughAgenda #CementIndustry
On 15th November, senior leaders from the Steel and Cement & Concrete Breakthrough co-lead countries, including Malte Bornkamm, Head of Industry Decarbonisation Division at Germany’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Rachel McCormick, Director General of International and Intergovernmental Affairs at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Salama Alhaj Alawadhi, Director of In-Country Value Department at the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Ed Webber, Deputy Director of Financing and Sector Transitions at the UK’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero gathered to discuss how stronger international collaboration can speed up industrial decarbonisation. The strategic dialogue with governments, philanthropic organisations, leading international initiatives, and global companies focused on areas where coordinated action is urgently needed to accelerate industry transitions by COP30. Key highlights included: - Insights from Araceli Fernandez Pales, International Energy Agency (IEA), Anne DeKeukelaer, GCCA – Global Cement and Concrete Association, Hugo Salamanca, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). - Consensus on priorities including scaling financial and technical assistance in the Global South, driving demand for low carbon industrial products, and enabling the adoption of common and net-zero compatible standards. - Support for major announcements at COP29 in support of these efforts, including the Global Pledge on Scaling International Assistance for Industry Decarbonisation and the $420m kickstarter pledge from the UK and Germany and the launch of GCCA’s international definitions for low carbon cement and concrete. The event underscored the importance of ambitious goals as #COP30 approaches. #NetZero #BreakthroughAgenda
