Today, Eleanor Thomson, our Lead Technologist at Gentian, presented at the inaugural ESA Biospace conference! Eleanor showcased our innovative Eco-Patterns project, which uses satellite remote sensing to revolutionize peatland condition assessments. This work demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and ecological conservation while highlighting the potential of Earth observation in biodiversity studies. The #BIOSPACE25 conference is a groundbreaking event exploring satellite remote sensing applications across terrestrial and marine ecosystems. We're honored to contribute to this international platform and share our approach to standardizing environmental monitoring methods. Eco-Patterns represents more than a project—it's a movement toward better stewardship of our planet's vital peatlands, which are crucial for biodiversity, carbon storage and climate resilience. As an Innovate UK project led by Gentian with academic and industry partners, Eco-Patterns uses high-resolution imagery and deep learning to analyze habitat "textures" across peatlands and link these textures to an easy-to-understand condition matrix for policymakers. With support from major UK environmental organizations, we're developing standardized peatland monitoring methods that could support market standards like the Peatland Code. Our validation partners—including the West Midlands Combined Authority, National Trust, Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales, NatureScot, and Northern Ireland Water—provide groundtruth data and testing sites throughout the UK. #RemoteSensing #PeatlandConservation #Sustainability #InnovateUK #ESAConference #EcoPatterns

Roses Are Red, Violets Are Blue… But Is Your Bouquet Harming Nature Too? Every year, nearly 250 million roses are sold for Valentine’s Day in the U.S. alone. With 90% of cut flowers in the U.S. imported—mainly from Colombia, Ecuador, and Kenya—their journey involves extensive refrigeration and air transport, generating a significant carbon footprint. A single bouquet of 12 Kenyan roses produces 75 kg of CO₂, equivalent to driving 200 miles. Gentian’s latest blog examines the true environmental cost of these traditions and explores more sustainable alternatives. Understanding the impact of our choices is the first step toward a more responsible way of celebrating. 🔗 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/eFnSCDFJ #Gentian #SustainableValentine #EcoFriendlyLove #ConsciousConsumerism

💚 In honour of having recently celebrated World Wetlands Day, Gentian proudly presents a new blog post exploring peatlands' vital role in global ecology and our commitment to their conservation through the Eco-Patterns project, featuring insights from our Remote Sensing Senior Expert, Dr Olga Tutubalina. Though peatlands cover just 3% of Earth's land surface, they are crucial to the global carbon cycle—storing twice as much carbon as all forests combined. These vital ecosystems face mounting threats from land use changes, climate change, and industrial exploitation, resulting in significant carbon emissions and biodiversity loss. Our blog explores peatlands' unique characteristics, their benefits, and the urgent challenges they face. To address these challenges, Gentian leads the Innovate UK-funded Eco-Patterns project (Ecological Characterisation and Monitoring of Habitats by AI Pattern-recognition). This initiative uses AI technology to better assess and manage these critical ecosystems. Eco-Patterns aligns with key environmental strategies, including the UK's 25-Year Environment Plan, by advancing nature-positive policies, enabling carbon financing, and supporting mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (#BNG). We invite environmental professionals, policymakers, and conservation enthusiasts to read our blog and learn about peatland ecosystems and our innovative approach to their protection. Together, we can enhance our understanding and preservation of these crucial natural resources. Understanding Peatlands: Hidden Climate Allies — Gentian

  • 🌍 The Critical Role of Peatlands in Global Ecosystems Peatlands are types of wetlands where the soil is composed mainly of peat, which consists of partially decayed organic matter, usually plant material, that accumulates under water-saturated conditions. These habitats are among Earth's most valuable ecosystems, playing a crucial role in biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. These remarkable landscapes store vast amounts of carbon, profoundly affecting our global climate system. Human activities severely threaten peatlands through agriculture, forestry, and peat extraction for horticulture and fuel. Additional pressures from pollution, overgrazing, and wildfires accelerate the degradation of these sensitive ecosystems. How We Can Help: → #Protect: Advocate for protected areas and buffer zones to shield peatlands from encroachment and preserve their ecological integrity. → #Restore: Support and participate in restoration initiatives to rehabilitate damaged peatlands, helping them regain their function as carbon sinks and biodiversity reserves. → #Regulate: Push for stronger laws and enforcement mechanisms to prevent practices that harm peatlands, ensuring sustainable land use and management. → #Educate and #Collaborate: Raise awareness about the importance of peatlands and collaborate on international efforts to promote best practices and innovative conservation strategies. Gentian is leading a project funded by Innovate UK: Eco-Patterns: Ecological Characterisation and Monitoring of Habitats by AI Pattern-recognition for Policy, Practice and Emerging Environmental Markets. This project aligns with global and regional initiatives like the UK's 25 Year Environment Plan, supporting our commitment to a nature-positive future through carbon financing and mandatory Biodiversity Net-Gain (#BNG) for developments. Through Eco-Patterns, we aim to pioneer these patterns' systematic use for peatland assessment. Initial ground-truth testing shows promising results for establishing a national classification system for peatland character and condition. Watch this space as we continue to develop our service for mapping peatland conditions, making the monitoring process for the Peatland Code more efficient and effective!
