Recently at Geolabs Limited, we’ve seen an increase in requests for constant normal stiffness (CNS) direct simple shear (DSS) testing. 🎥 In this short video, I’m preparing a sandstone specimen for CNS DSS test. After cutting and sanding to the required dimensions, grooves are made with extra care on the top and bottom of the specimen, allowing the use of porous platens with fins. 👩🏻🔬 Preparing rock specimens is time-consuming and requires a lot of effort, even with Danial Shirkavand helping me, but it's rewarding at the end with an adequate specimen! Besides, Chris Wallace designed and 3D printed some handy tools to facilitate the process. What range of normal stiffness (in kPa/mm) would you use for testing a 20 mm height specimen?
