York Georgian Society
Architecture and Planning
Founded in 1939 and dedicated to the preservation, study and appreciation of the Georgian heritage of the City of York.
About us
York Georgian Society was founded in 1939 to promote the preservation and care, and to foster the study and appreciation, of Georgian buildings in and around the City of York. It is one of the oldest societies in the world devoted to the Georgian era, and the second oldest such society in Great Britain outside London. The Society’s remit extends beyond architecture and the crafts associated with building to include the arts, culture and society of the period from 1660, the year of George I’s birth, to 1837, the year of William IV’s death. The aims of York Georgian Society are: to encourage the conservation, restoration and maintenance of Georgian buildings and architecture; to prevent disfigurement to settings and other features of Georgian character; to promote interest and education in, and knowledge and learning of all aspects of Georgian architecture, arts, culture and society, all with special but not exclusive reference to the City of York and its neighbourhood. York Georgian Society is a Registered Charity (no. 233175) Upcoming lectures: Saturday 12th February 2022 James Gibbs’s Training in Italy and the Establishment of his Career in England Willian Aslet, Research Student, Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. Saturday 12th March 2022 (after the AGM) John Aislabie (1670-1742): the Genius of the Place. Mark Newman, Archaeological Consultant, National Trust. York Georgian Society and the Georgian Group have partnered to invite you to a fascinating visit to Cannon Hall to learn more about the roof repair project at this outstanding, Grade-II* listed property 🏛️ This fantastic CPD opportunity offers a chance to see how MEND grants are supporting the continued vitality of the museum. Originally constructed as a grand country residence for the Spencer-Stanhope family, today Cannon Hall is a museum, park and gardens managed by Barnsley Council. LISTED BUILDING CONSENT APPLICATION York Georgian Society have considered proposals for West Side Farm, Nun Monkton, North Yorkshire, relating to refurbishment of a derelict dwelling, including demolition of two outbuildings, new garage extension, replacement doors and windows, and solar panels. West Side Farm is an 18th century, Grade-II listed farmhouse built in a traditional vernacular style, forming an important landmark within the Nun Monkton Conservation Area. ✅ We support the principle of refurbishment and commend the heritage-led approach taken to bringing this derelict building back into use. We are also supportive of the solar panels on the rear elevation, which will contribute to national decarbonisation targets. ❌ However, we had concerns with the demolition of the late 19th century piggery, which contributes to understanding of the farmstead, particularly its Edwardian development during the agricultural depression. We also questioned some of the structural proposals and the detail provided for the impact on heritage significance. 📝Find the application (ZC24/01437/LB) here: https://lnkd.in/ejeNa6Sb *********************** 🏛️The York Georgian Society are a local amenity group that exists to preserve, enhance appreciation of, and share learning about, all things Georgian in York. LISTED BUILDING CONSENT APPLICATION! York Georgian Society have considered proposals for the former Little Betty’s at 46, 48 and 50 Stonegate. The building has 15th and 16th century origins, 18th and 19th century alterations, and is Grade-II* listed. The proposals seek to convert the vacant cafe into a high-end licenced bar, remove modern decoration, reconfigure back of house spaces and install service runs for beer python pipes. ✅We support the principle of reuse of the vacant upper floors and welcome the proposals to reveal historic features such as flagstone floors and timber-framed walls. ❌However, we have concerns with the level of information provided, as this is a well-researched building of medieval origin. More research is needed to fully understand the impact of some of the proposals on this important historic fabric. Removal of masonry infill panels and stone hearths are some of the proposals we have questioned. Want to learn more or have your say? The deadline for comments is 23 July. We are delighted to be hosting an exciting conference with the Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies at the University of York on the 18th May! York and the Georgian City: Past, Present and Future will re-evaluate the notion of York as a Georgian city, a founding premise of the York Georgian Society in 1939. The Conference will examine to what extent York can be described as a ‘Georgian’ city, and whether that label is relevant or meaningful in the present day. Why not a medieval, or a Victorian city? Is ‘Georgian’ merely a paradigm for good taste? Standard tickets are £25 and concessions are £15 for YGS members and University of York staff, £5 for students. The price includes morning coffee, a light lunch, afternoon tea, and a reception. For more information and details of how to book please check out the link in our bio or check out the 'What's On' page of our website. 📷: The New Terrace Walk, York by Nathan Drake, 1756- York Art Gallery

Last week, we were invited to St Michael le Belfrey as part of the Impact building project to see the church in all its 16th century glory, following removal of the later galleries and pews. It was great to hear from Revd. Andy Baker, Louise Hampson and Gillian Shepherd on the future of the church and how this will be shared with its users. #Belfry #York #Heritage

We had a great time at the SPAB #Yorkshire Christmas Drinks on Friday night, held in the fabulous early 18th century Mansion House. Lovely to meet so many like-minded people working within the heritage and craftskills sectors, and hearing about about the projects they've been working on over the last year. #GeorgianYork #LordMayor #WilliamEtty
