At COP29, developed nations pledged $300 billion annually by 2035 to support developing countries in transitioning to renewable energy and adapting to the growing impacts of climate change. While this funding marks progress, it falls short of the $1.3 trillion requested, highlighting the scale of action still needed. Accurate, actionable data is essential to help communities and businesses prepare for and mitigate risks like flooding, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events. At GeoSmart, we’re committed to providing advanced tools and insights to support informed decision-making and build resilience. As the climate crisis intensifies, data-driven solutions will be at the heart of safeguarding our future.

Storm Bert has devastated parts of South Wales and England with up to 100mm of rain causing severe flooding, power outages, and travel chaos. Over 200 flood alerts remain in place, with some areas facing life-threatening conditions. As extreme weather becomes more frequent, proactive flood planning is essential. GeoSmart uses advanced data to assess flood risks, helping businesses and authorities protect lives and infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/giSkYYPJ (Image: Phil Mingo/PPAUK)

As beautiful as the UK’s recent snowfall has been, it also serves as a reminder of the complex relationship between weather patterns and flood risk. When snow melts rapidly - especially during a sudden thaw - it can overwhelm drainage systems and lead to localised flooding. This highlights the critical importance of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and proactive flood risk management. Here’s why it matters: - Snowmelt surges: Melting snow can mimic the effects of heavy rainfall, saturating the ground and increasing surface runoff. - Urban areas at risk: Hard surfaces like roads and pavements prevent water from infiltrating naturally, putting pressure on drainage infrastructure. - SuDS solutions: Techniques such as permeable paving, green roofs, and retention basins can mitigate these impacts, reducing runoff and protecting communities. At GeoSmart, we help clients understand and prepare for these risks through comprehensive flood risk assessments and drainage strategies. Whether you’re a planner, developer, or asset manager, now is the time to evaluate your approach to extreme weather events. https://lnkd.in/eM-98BbA

Our dedicated GeoSmart consultants have been on-site recently to support crucial Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs). These site visits are essential when tailored evaluations are required, ensuring every detail is considered. Here's a glimpse into the process: 📝 Consultation with stakeholders The visit begins with a quick questionnaire with the building owner or responsible person. This step helps us uncover valuable details about the flooding history and drainage systems. 📏 On-site measurements Next, we inspect and measure key elements such as: - Threshold heights - Critical infrastructure levels - Potential ingress points such as air bricks and ventilation grills 👀 Drainage and visual inspections The team conducts a thorough visual inspection of the drains and may also assess other areas deemed relevant to the report’s purpose. Depending on the objective (whether for planning, due diligence, or a Section 19 flood report) the visit focuses on identifying elements that might not be visible in flood mapping, but could impact the risk rating. Our goal is to ensure no detail is overlooked regarding flood risk, giving you comprehensive and actionable insights tailored to your property and its unique context.
