Ever wondered how glass bottles are made? Glass is one of the most eco-friendly types of packaging which is why it’s so widely used. In this article, we look at which raw materials go into glass bottles and the step-by-step process to create the final product. Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eQ_nSUXz P.S. We're delighted to announce our new pilot-scale research furnace is going to be open for projects in 2025. Our origins in world-leading glass research started over 100 years ago – so it's great to enhance this area of our business. The new furnace will enable us to run trials of up to 50 kg of glass per melt, providing you with a way to scale-up and commercialise new innovations with confidence. Take a look at this Glass International article for the details: https://lnkd.in/eKe6zNNA

This year colleagues at British Glass and Glass Technology Services have collected gifts for Cash for Kids South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Mission Christmas. Cash for Kids is dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK from the moment they’re born up to and including the age of 18. Mission Christmas ensures that no child goes without at Christmas, whether that’s through financial support or a present to open on Christmas morning. Cash for Kids operates across the UK and Ireland. If you’d like to make a financial donation you can do so here - https://lnkd.in/gZJ8qbfb

Thermal shock is a well-known cause of glass failure, but what does it mean? In the video on the left, we demonstrate glass being heated to the point of failure due to thermal shock. The accompanying FEA model video on the right (created using COMSOL, Inc. Multiphysics) illustrates how the heated centre of the glass expands resulting in compressive stress, while the surrounding glass is subjected to tension as a reaction. It’s this tension at the edges that leads to failure — microfractures at the edge open up, resulting in catastrophic failure across the entire sheet. A similar process occurs when glass is cooled rapidly. The thermal gradient induces tension at the surface, which can open up surface defects and cause the glass to fail. #ThermalShock #GlassFailure #FEAModeling #Engineering #COMSOL #MaterialScience #Glass

I'm very happpy to be able to share a collaborative paper titled "Ultrashort Pulsed Laser Welding of Co-Doped Er,Yb:Phosphate Laser Glass and Nd:YAG Laser Crystals to Structural Materials for Robust Mechanical Mounting and Thermal Management." This paper is the result of ongoing collaboration between GTS and the incredible team at Heriot-Watt University, including Adrian Dzipalski, Richard Carter, M J Daniel Esser, and Duncan Hand. Together, we have achieved a significant milestone: successfully welding Er,Yb phosphate laser glass (produced by GTS) to copper substrates using ultrashort pulsed lasers. Why is this important? - This potentially game-changing technology provides a robust method to attach laser gain glass to heat-sinking materials without adhesives. By eliminating adhesives, this approach addresses critical challenges like outgassing during assembly and offers improved thermal management—essential for advancing optoelectronic device assembly and performance. The paper explores how precise laser processing parameters influence weld quality and includes analysis such as shear strength and accelerated lifetime tests. Curious to learn more? Check out the paper linked below and feel free to get in touch—I’d love to discuss how this technology could impact your applications! 📄 https://lnkd.in/eVs3d-8H #LaserWelding #Photonics #MaterialsScience #ResearchInnovation #Collaboration

It was great to sponsor the Innovative solution category at this year's #GlassFocus awards! A big congratulations to Pilkington United Kingdom Limited and ZYTRONIC for their transparent, conductive glass (powered by NSG TEC™) – very worthy winners. Well done to everyone else who also won on the night.
