A digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical object. It is created by collecting data from various sensors and Internet of things (IoT) devices and using that data to create a virtual model of a real-world object. The virtual model is an exact copy, including its physical properties, behaviour and performance. The Advantages of Digital Twin Tech 🔴 Enhanced customer experience: Digital twins enable corporates to provide customers with personalized recommendations. For example, a digital twin of a home can be used to recommend energy-saving measures based on the occupants' behaviour. 🔴 Reduced risk: Digital twins are used for simulating potential scenarios and identifying potential risks before they occur. LATEST: TM Forum Autonomous Networks Level 4 Industry Blueprint 🟥 Autonomous networks (ANs) represent a transformative shift for communications service providers (#CSPs), enabling them to operate more efficiently, deliver better customer experience & innovate rapidly. TM Forum is at the forefront of industry-wide collaboration to drive the deployment and evolution of AN technology, processes & business models. 🟥 During the past year, CSPs have taken significant steps forward in laying the foundation for autonomous networks by upgrading ICT infrastructure including wireless & fiber-optic networks. Some mobile operators are beginning to roll out 3GPP’s 5G-Advanced standards, while optical backbone networks are entering the 400-Gbps era, enabling ubiquitous, high-quality 10-Gbps access for end users. 🟥 At the same time, AI technology is evolving rapidly, with CSPs beginning to use GenAI and launch projects to develop telecom-specific language models. Telco operations are evolving, too, as operators adopt platform business models such as network-as-a-service (NaaS) to abstract the complexity of the underlying network using APIs such as the TM Forum Open APIs. 🟥 Ultimately, CSPs need to be able to scale orchestration of zero-touch, zero-wait & zero-trouble services end to end across network domains (for example, radio access, fixed access, core, IP, optical transport, data center/cloud networks). This requires automation of the entire service lifecycle, from ordering to fulfillment, activation, orchestration, management, assurance, optimization, billing. 🟥 Telcos have been working on this kind of automation for years & have made progress. In fact, TM Forum’s Open API program resulted from these efforts. But end-to-end automation has remained elusive because of interoperability issues, architectural fragmentation, heavy customization. TM Forum’s Autonomous Networks Project aims to change this. 🟥The project was formed in 2019 to define what it means for networks to be “autonomous”, to explain how to get there. Unlike automation, which relies on predefined rules, autonomy involves intelligent systems making independent decisions. ISAC is being standardized in 3GPP Release 19. This release focuses on the initial steps of ISAC standardization, including use cases, requirements, channel modeling. While Release 19 lays the foundation for ISAC, further advancements and detailed specifications are expected in subsequent releases, such as Release 20 and beyond. These future releases will likely delve deeper into specific technologies, protocols, system designs to fully realize the potential of ISAC in #6G #networks ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Given the potential benefits of ISAC in enhancing both communication and sensing capabilities in future 6G networks, what are the key challenges & technical hurdles that need to be addressed to ensure its successful implementation & widespread adoption? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is gaining widespread attention as a crucial technology for future wireless systems. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has regarded ISAC as one of the key potential technologies for the hashtag #6G mobile communication systems. Future 6G networks are expected to utilize wide-bandwidth radio signals, large-scale antenna arrays, and multiple network nodes to offer efficient sensing capabilities including detection, localization, tracking, activity recognition, and environmental reconstruction, which brings the ultimate vision of the interconnected, intelligent, & perceptive world into reality. Moreover, in future 6G wireless networks, ISAC will support higher data rates, enhanced communication reliability, and improved network coverage. ISAC provides substantial gains by combining communication and sensing functions into a unified framework. This integration results in increased spectrum and hardware utilization efficiency, collectively known as integration gain. More importantly, coordination gain is achieved through the mutual assistance of communication & sensing, enhancing overall system performance. ISAC allows the communication system to serve as a sensor, utilizing radio wave transmission, reflection, and scattering to perceive and understand the physical environment, thereby offering a broader range of new services.
