In a briefing to our network on the implications of outcome of the US elections, Tom White, Europe Director, reflected on the initial EU response to the re-election of Donald Trump. Tom notes that many European leaders are adopting a more pragmatic and transactional approach, focusing on preparation and planning, as an emotional response to the decision is largely considered as counterproductive. At Global Counsel, we are supporting clients in both the US and EU to adapt to the new transatlantic relationship and build effective advocacy and engagement strategies to navigate this new period for international diplomacy. In a briefing to our network on the international response to a second Donald Trump presidency, Ahmed Helal, MENA Director, examines how opinions on US policy on Israel-Palestine have affected responses in key voter groups. Ahmed highlights that the conflict became a prominent issue in swing states with large Arab-American and Muslim-American communities, with many voters switching over to vote for Trump in protest to the Democrat response to the conflict. At Global Counsel, we are working closely with clients to navigate complexities of local, regional, and international policy and regulatory developments in the MENA region, and how these will be affected by the future of geopolitics. ⚠️ What do Trump's tariff promises mean for the international trading system? Varsha Shankar, Associate in our Trade and industrial policy practice, explores in this week's edition of 'Trade Insights', our fortnightly newsletter which covers the key global trade policy trends to watch. "Much attention has been focused on how and how quickly Trump could implement a major change to the US tariff schedule. While the President has the power to make narrow or temporary changes to the tariff regime, a more fundamental change such as a 10% blanket tariff would likely require an alternative policy vehicle. In theory, Trump could invoke broad emergency powers available to the Executive to do this, but these are likely to face legal or congressional challenge. The most secure way in which Trump could implement his tariff proposals is with legislative backing – and even in a Republican-controlled Congress, this will be challenging to secure.” Want to receive Trade Insights direct to your inbox? 📈 We’re all aware of the rapid change in the global economy. Letta and Draghi have both respectively identified the challenges Europe is facing. We know that governments need to roll up their sleeves to respond to this to achieve long-term growth, support net zero aims, and deliver economic security and resilience objectives. ❓ But how can the UK and the EU use international partnerships and best practice to pursue their competitiveness objectives in the face of geopolitical challenges? What role is there for businesses, regulators, and financial institutions to support growth, competitiveness, and industrial objectives? Are there areas where the UK and EU could collaborate to pursue a ‘European offer’ for competitiveness? These were just a few of the questions young thinkers sought to answer at the British Residence last night. 🤝 Thank you to our event partners from Brussels New Generation (BNG), King's College London, and Global Counsel - it was a pleasure to work together on this event. 🎇 It was fantastic to have Mitja Schulz with us, as our event moderator, who masterfully kept the energy and engagement high throughout the evening. 💬 During the discussion, we heard from four expert young thinkers, who each provided an example of sector-specific leadership addressing the event's core theme: ‘competitiveness through collaboration’. Emilie Kerstens outlined the current shared challenges facing the UK and the EU, making the case for a joint clean energy technologies strategy. Daisy Cummins discussed the UK approach to competitiveness, through collaboration, particularly the Industrial Strategy focusing on the growth mission. Christopher Jakoubek argued for the importance of UK-EU collaboration in staying competitive in financial services, particularly in areas of shared interest. Claudia Vecciolini, PhD focused on manufacturing digitalisation, particularly the UK perspective, with regional disparity and ongoing skill gaps for businesses as two key challenges. 📣 We hope members of the audience also enjoyed the opportunity to respond to what they’d heard from the speakers and bring their own examples and expertise to the evening’s theme in a fun and interactive way. The UK Government’s new, modern Industrial Strategy will be a crucial part of our Growth Mission. It will be international from the start: responsive to the global context, delivered through international partnerships, and focused on driving growth through trade and investment.

We are delighted to partner with Chase India to launch a new report alongside #COP29, which calls for transformative financial and policy frameworks that support and empower women as agents of climate resilience. Women represent nearly 50% of South Asia’s population, yet those in climate-vulnerable regions confront significant challenges exacerbated by climate change and systemic exclusion from essential financial resources. As vital stewards of natural resources, women are disproportionately affected by climate impacts while lacking access to the financial tools necessary to build resilience. This report explores this “double burden,” emphasizing the urgent need for gender-responsive climate finance. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dPb6Vn2y

What does the policy and regulatory landscape of the EU's Electric Vehicle sector reveal about the EU's competing priorities when it comes to clean technologies? Electric Vehicles and the recent EU tariffs on China-made EVs featured heavily in yesterday's hearings of Commissioner-designates Maroš Šefčovič and Apostolos Tzitzikostas. With the landscape of industrial policy changing rapidly in the wake of a new European Commission, landmark elections in UK, US and beyond, our trade and industrial policy team is unpacking key strategic industries and sectors, and what they mean for the wider policy agenda. In our inaugural note, Emilie Kerstens and Kristina Králová take a closer look at the EV sector, the challenges it faces and the lessons for other clean technologies.
