Evidence increasingly highlights Neglected Tropical Diseases' (NTD) climate sensitivity, underscoring the importance of investing in NTD elimination within low-emission, climate- resilient health systems. Such investments have a multiplier effect, advancing economic, educational, environmental, health, and prosperity outcomes. https://lnkd.in/gpv8QBad While attention to climate impacts on health and neglected disease has rapidly increased since COP28, country leaders have been taking action on climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilient health systems over the last decade or so. Our friends at The END Fund, working alongside partners, have been collaborating with and consulting country leaders to understand the challenges communities are facing, strategies making progress, barriers to overcome, and opportunities for funders to support their efforts. This World Climate Day , take a look at this brief that highlights case studies of countries facing the challenges of the dual burdens of the impacts of climate change and NTDs and the actions they are taking to build climate-resilient health systems. Consultations with contributors to this brief and desk research were conducted to inform each of the case studies featuring countries across Africa and the Western Pacific Islands. Throughout consultations leaders outlined actionable recommendations for donors to build on ongoing partner efforts to support country-led, climate-resilient health systems by elevating the leadership of those in countries and communities at the frontlines of the climate response.

Test & Treat strategies for #schistosomiasis: In the run-up to Universal Health Coverage Day 2024 #UHCDay, please join the upcoming #ISNTDConnect session on Dec 10th in collaboration with the Global Schistosomiasis Alliance, outlining exciting advances in Test & Treat strategies for schistosomiasis. As schistosomiasis prevalence decreases, alternatives to Mass Drug Administration are needed, particularly to ensure that those in need of treatment receive treatment, and that schistosomiasis infections rates do not bounce back to higher levels. Test and treat strategies can be an important part of the surveillance-response approach to sustain schistosomiasis elimination as a public health problem and an important tool to support targeted health investment by governments as highlighted by this year's UHC day. We are delighted to welcome Dr Steffi Knopp (Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute), Dr Lydia Trippler (University of Glasgow) and Florence Wakesho (Ministry of Health, Kenya) who will present findings from the SchistoBreak S. haematobium project in Pemba, Zanzibar, Tanzania and also discuss research-in-progress for S. mansoni in Kenya. Prospective PhD students... Please check out this exciting opportunity in my lab to investigate human blood flukes (schistosomes). The project is part of a Doctoral Training Programme in Precision Medicine and will be co-supervised by Prof. Andrew MacDonald in Edinburgh. The goal is to spatially and temporally resolve how schistosome eggs interact with tissues of their host to cause granulomas. Applications due in January, but a Q&A session will take place on zoom next week. https://lnkd.in/efHGRSTz

A great article by Caroline Pensotti WI-HER, LLC on why #FGSchisto matters - "When addressing FGS becomes a priority, we can create stronger interventions that have far-reaching implications for HIV prevention and health equity, enabling women to take care of their health and well-being". #womenshealth #WorldAIDSDay #schistosomiasis #BeatNTDS
Research shows that the neglected tropical disease FGS increases vulnerability to HIV infection. WI-HER's Caroline Pensotti makes the case for how multiple integrated, cross-sectoral approaches can tackle the dual impact of FGS and HIV: https://ow.ly/VIj550UgRGa #WorldAIDSDay #HealthOutcomes #HolisticSolutions #Collaboration

Women and girls with untreated female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) are three times more likely to get HIV. FGS is a neglected disease, so on #WorldAIDSDay2024, we want to spread the message that this condition can be prevented & cured if treated early. As part of the FGS Integration Group (FIG), Sightsavers is working to reduce the risk of #HIV for women & girls. Community inclusion is essential for ending HIV & Female Genital Schistosomiasis. Take the path that ends AIDS by addressing Female Genital Schistosomiasis, a risk for HIV affecting 56 million women & girls in Africa. FGS awareness is low and it is often misdiagnosed as an STI. This World AIDS Day join us, our FGS Integration Group [FIG] partners Sightsavers, LVCT HEALTH, Unlimit Health (formerly SCI Foundation), Bridges to Development, Frontline AIDS, Coalition for Operational Research on Neglected Tropical Diseases, Avert, FGS Society of Nigeria and USAID in urging governments to address FGS as a specific reproductive health condition and to strengthen cross-sector coordination for women’s health and stronger health systems & to integrate FGS & #HIV. https://lnkd.in/eKhkpDtc

I'm thrilled to announce Wellcome Trust's new funding call! We're looking to fund research teams in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to generate evidence on how climate mitigation interventions affect health. 🔍 What’s needed? 🟢 Research on the health effects of greenhouse gas mitigation strategies. 🟢 A focus on local priorities. 🟢 Potential for evidence generated to drive positive climate and health outcomes. 🟢 Transdisciplinary teams, led by an LMIC based PI. 💰 Funding available: £500,000 to £2 million 💡 Duration: 2-4 years 🗓 Interested? Submit your preliminary by 18 February 2025. Check out the details on the Wellcome website to learn more about why we're funding this work and how to apply! ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eYQMaYU7
Understanding the health effects of climate change mitigation is crucial, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Climate mitigation involves actions to reduce current or avoid future greenhouse gas emissions. These actions tackle climate change head-on and can have positive health co-benefits. But there’s limited evidence in LMICs. Introducing our new Climate and Health funding call. We are inviting research teams based in LMICs to investigate climate change mitigation. The aim is to generate significant evidence on the health effects of these interventions. 🔍 What are we looking for? 🟢 Projects must investigate the health effects alongside the social and economic impacts of planned or implemented greenhouse gas mitigation strategies. 🟢 Research should reflect local priorities and produce evidence to drive positive climate and health outcomes. 🟢 Teams should be transdisciplinary to ensure research relevance and impact. 💰 What level of funding will we provide? We are awarding between £500,000 and £2 million per project for a duration of 2-4 years. 🗓 When can you apply? Pre-applications must be submitted by 18 February 2025. Visit our website to learn more about the opportunity and how to apply ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eF2dtSXK
