Global LNG demand to rise by around 60% by 2040: Shell Global demand for #LNG is forecast to rise by around 60% by 2040, largely driven by #economic growth in #Asia, #emissions reductions in heavy #industry and #transport as well as the impact of #artificialintelligence, Shell said in its latest LNG Outlook 2025. * Global LNG trade grew by only 2 MMT in 2024, the lowest annual increase in 10 years, to reach 407 MMT due to constrained new supply #development. * More than 170 MMT of new LNG supply is set to be available by 2030, “helping to meet stronger #gas demand, especially in Asia, but start-up timings of new LNG projects are uncertain.” * “LNG will continue to be a fuel of choice because it’s a reliable, flexible and adaptable way to meet growing global #energy demand.” * LNG demand in the #marine sector will rise to more than 16 MMT/Y by 2030 as LNG is becoming a #cost-effective #fuel for #shipping and #roadtransport, bringing down emissions today and offering pathways to incorporate lower-carbon sources such as #bio-LNG or synthetic LNG. * #Europe will continue to need LNG into the 2030s to balance the growing share of intermittent #renewables in its #powersector and to ensure #energysecurity. * The #USA is set to extend its lead as the world’s largest LNG exporter, potentially reaching 180 MMT/Y by 2030 and accounting for a third of global supply. * The early part of 2024 saw #spot LNG prices fall to their lowest level since early 2022, but prices recovered by mid-year due to delays in the development of new supply capacity. * #China took advantage of lower prices, importing 79 MMT during the last year and #India LNG imports rose to 27 MMT, up 20% YoY while #European LNG imports fell by 23 MMT, down 19% YoY, due to strong renewable energy #generation and a limited recovery in #industrial gas demand. However, Europe is expected to increase imports of LNG in 2025 to refill its diminished #gasstorage. Cyprus Block 6 gas, a new lifeline for Egypt's Damietta LNG plant Eni and TotalEnergies have signed a host government agreement with #Egypt and #Cyprus for the exploitation of Cyprus’ Cronos Block 6 gas #resources. The agreement outlines a “comprehensive” framework enabling a “rapid” #development of the Cronos #gas #discovery #offshore Cyprus under which the #gas will be transported and processed in existing Zohr facilities to be then liquefied in the Damietta LNG plant for export to #European markets, said #Eni. Cronos gas has been discovered in 2022 and its in place #reserves is estimated at more than 3 TCF. “Additionally, Block 6 encompasses further potential resources under #exploration and appraisal, including the Zeus discovery made in 2022.” In 2022, Eni signed a #frameworkagreement with Egypt that will allow to maximize #gasproduction and #LNG exports from the #African country to #Europe and specifically to #Italy. The parties agreed to utilize #Egyptian gas reserves by increasing jointly operated gas activities and identifying opportunities to maximize short-term gas production. The #Italian operator will also optimize the exploration campaigns in existing blocks and in the newly acquired acreage in the Nile Delta, Eastern #Mediterranean and Western Desert regions, according to the Global LNG Database®. In February 2024, Eni announced the completion of the Cronos-2 #well, #drilled to appraise the Cronos discovery. “The production test allowed for the estimation of a well production capacity in excess of 150 MMSCF/D in production configuration and is instrumental in progressing with the studies to select the best fast-track development option.” #TotalEnergies holds a 50% interest in Block 6, where Eni is the operator (50%). Importing LNG is now a necessity for Victoria Six months ago, when #Adelaide-based Beach Energy revealed that a new “extremely disappointing” assessment had dramatically diminished #gasreserves at its #nearshore Enterprise field in Victoria, Australia, Global LNG Info asked “Is importing LNG a necessity for Victoria?” and now it finds that the answer is precisely Yes. The Enterprise #gasfield, which is now estimated to contain about one-third less #naturalgas and expected to run out of #resources sooner than originally thought, started to produce #gas just 8 months ago. This setback along with rapidly declining output from #ExxonMobil-operated gas fields in Bass Strait suggests that to mitigate the #risks of looming shortfalls and higher #gasprices in the high season period, local and federal #governments have to secure additional sources of #gassupply by decisively and urgently supporting #LNG import project(s). The Bass Strait gas fields’ development project was #Australia’s first major #offshore #oil and gas #development, located off the southeast coast of #Victoria. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has warned that gas shortages in the southern states such as Victoria were likely to become more pronounced in 2026 and structural by 2028. Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill has recently remarked that “affordable #energy” and tapping new gas supplies are vital for Victoria’s prosperity. According to the Global LNG Database®, several LNG import projects have been proposed for the #Australian east coast region (#NewSouthWales and Victoria). However, two of them have already been canceled and the other least progressed projects are struggling to receive local authorities’ approvals and secure long-term customers required to underpin the project’s #finance. “Regulatory support is urgently needed to encourage #investment in new gas and LNG supply projects in Victoria and NSW states.” For now, the sole advanced LNG import project in Australia is Squadron’s Port Kembla Gas Terminal, located off Port Kembla in New South Wales. The under-development project’s start-up was initially scheduled for 2020-Q1, but now it is expected to be commissioned in 2026-Q2 subject to secure sufficient #demand for the #terminal’s capacity. INPEX to commence FEED work for Abadi LNG in mid-2025 INPEX has said that it expects to commence front-end #engineering and #design (FEED) work for the #Indonesia’s Abadi LNG project in the middle of this year with production aimed to start at early 2030s. The #Japanese operator has continued preparations for the project’s #FEED and final #investment decision (#FID) and undertaken the project’s #onshore and #offshore #geophysical & #geotechnical surveys in 2024. The Japanese operator has already received #Indonesian government’s approval for an amendment to #productionsharingcontract (PSC) confirming #CCS as a part of PSC-defined #petroleum operation. The $20 billion Abadi LNG project had been listed by the government as a national #strategic project in June 2017. The current shareholders of the Abadi LNG export project (including Masela gas field development) are #INPEX (operator) 65%, #Pertamina 20% and #Petronas 15%. African nations to revive Trans-Saharan gas pipeline to Europe Algeria, Nigeria and Niger signed new contracts aimed to revive the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project to Europe. AFP has cited Algerian #energy minister Mohamed Arkab as saying that the #African countries’ officials have signed contracts on “an update of the feasibility study” for the TSGP #project that will lay out the “required means for accelerating the #development of this major project in a timely manner and at competitive costs”. No update was given for the #pipeline’s #cost, which was initially estimated at $10 billion. TSGP also known as Trans-African #gaspipeline is a planned 4,128-Km #naturalgas pipeline from #Nigeria to #Algeria. From there #gas could be transported through the undersea #Mediterranean pipeline Transmed to #Europe. Nigerian #NNPC and Algerian #Sonatrach signed the Memorandum of Understanding for preparations of the project in 2002 and then in 2005 they hired Penspen to prepare the project’s #feasibilitystudy. The #feasibility study was completed in September 2006, and it found the pipeline to be technically and #economically feasible and reliable. The intergovernmental agreement on the [30 BCM/Y] gas pipeline was signed by #energy ministers of Nigeria, #Niger and Algeria on in 2009. Source: Global LNG Info Analytics, Map: Wikipedia

Deutsche ReGas terminates its FSRU sub-charter contract with German government Deutsche ReGas confirmed that it has terminated #charter contract with Germany’s federal ministry for #economic affairs for the Energos Power LNG FSRU. The Energos Infrastructure-owned 174,000-CM FSRU was one of two floating #regasification units currently operating at the “Deutsche Ostsee #LNG imports terminal at Mukran in the Baltic Sea. “DET's ruinous #pricing policy since December 2024 is one of several reasons for terminating the sub-charter contract,” the only private operator of LNG terminals in #Germany said, adding that it regrets being forced to take this step. DET is a state-owned #German company that operates the country’s floating LNG #terminals. ”Since December 2024, DET has been systematically marketing its capacities for the regulated LNG terminals at prices significantly below the #cost-covering fees approved by the German Federal Network Agency. This has led and continues to lead to significant market distortion in Germany.” Earlier, Deutsche ReGas had argued that the lower and state-subsidised regasification fees offered by DET to attract buyers are a threat to its #business, reminding that as a private company it cannot match the levels while the state rules entail that DET must not offer slots at prices below costs. However, DET told Reuters that short-term #auctions in December [2024] had helped ensure #supplysecurity at all times, amid muted booking #interest. "We are complying with the #regulatory requirements for the #marketing of regas capacity for our terminals." #German government has remarked that with developing LNG import terminals, it is responding to the latest #geopolitical #developments. "We must reduce dependence on #Russiangas. LNG terminals help to increase #securityofsupply in Germany and #Europe,” Robert Habeck German minister of economic had said earlier.
