📢Here are three lesser-known and interesting facts about Pentewan Valley Parish in Cornwall: ◾ ⚓A Harbour Built for Clay: The picturesque Pentewan Harbour wasn't always a leisure destination. It was purpose-built in the early 19th century to facilitate the export of china clay from the St. Austell area. This highlights the valley's industrial heritage and its role in shaping the Cornish economy. ◾  🚂Innovative Transport: The Pentewan Railway, constructed in 1829, was a pioneering narrow-gauge railway, showcasing the valley's early adoption of technological advancements. This unique transport system, initially horse-drawn and later upgraded for steam locomotives, played a crucial role in connecting the clay pits to the harbour. ◾ 🌿A Battle Against Nature: Despite its beauty, Pentewan Harbour faced a constant struggle against silting. The ongoing battle to keep the harbour navigable reflects the resilience and determination of the community in overcoming natural challenges.
