This week, our Co-Founder and Head of People, Sarah Dean took a team down to Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone to volunteer some festive man hours. We had been collecting at the warehouse for their annual Christmas gift drive, meaning that no young person in the borough would go without a present this Christmas. Between ourselves and many other local businesses, thousands of gifts were donated and now needed wrapping. Volunteers to the wrapping rescue! 🎁 Thank you to Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone for having us for a lovely afternoon of gift wrapping, carol singing, networking and mulled wine 🍷 We had a lovely time and it’s beyond important to us as a company to make sure we are supporting the young people in our area. Youth Zone provides access to crucial out of school support and opportunities to those that need it most. We are so excited to work closely with Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone next year on some exciting projects 👗 Thank you again for showing us the work that you do and allowing us to be involved. Another successful volunteer day done at our local foodbank in Blackburn 🥳 Thanks to the team there for hosting us as always, and thanks to Matt and Becs from our team for getting their hands dirty and stuck in. DID YOU KNOW ….. - Between April 2023 and March 2024, the number of people that used a food bank for the first time was 655,000. - Trussell's UK-wide community distributed more than 3.1 million emergency food parcels to people facing hardship – this is an increase of 94% over the past five years. - More than 1.1 million of these parcels were distributed for children. Today we have had the absolute pleasure of volunteering for our local foodbank in Blackburn! Over the summer, they’re running a pet food drive in partnership with our local Pets At Home store. As the rates of those needing to use a foodbank continues to rise, so does the need for those with pets. We are huge animal lovers here at Go Thrift and we couldn’t agree more that nobody should have to choose between feeding themselves or feeding their pet. Last Friday we sent a handful of our team down to our local food bank in Blackburn to volunteer for the day. To say it was eye opening would be an understatement. We’d collected for weeks leading up to this and took with us a large trolley full of donations. However, seeing the amount of food given out on a daily basis made us realise that our donation was just a drop in the ocean of the amount that is needed. Food banks across the country are under tremendous pressure with the current cost of living crisis and they need donations as well as volunteers to keep up with the constant demand. FAST FASHION MUST BE STOPPED SNL’S ‘Xiemu Ad’ skit has amplified everything we are working towards, and we couldn’t be happier to see such a huge platform highlight the ongoing issue with fast fashion …. even in the form of comedy! While we’re not laughing at the points raised in the video such as - Forced labour 👩🏻🤝👨🏽 - Counterfeit goods 👕 - Overworked staff 😰 - Unfair wages 😡 - Poor quality products ❌ - Eco damaging fabrics 🌎 We massively appreciate the SNL team for bringing some serious light to the problems. Fast Fashion is damaging to our planet, the people on it and the future we are trying to protect. We must keep talking about this, having the uncomfortable conversation and offering alternatives to shoppers who feel they have no choice but to shop in such a cheap way. Here at Go Thrift, we offer that alternative to our customers. Brands they love, incredible quality and at affordable prices. We are working to disrupt the fast fashion cycle and urge everyone to see past the cheap prices these companies offer and ask yourselves, why. Well done #SNL for shining a light on such a dark corner in society.
