“This rise in energy bills is driven by the wholesale cost of natural gas and has nothing to do with the Government’s policies to achieve net zero emissions of greenhouse gases.” Bob Ward is in the Big Issue commenting on the Ofgem announcement that energy bills are set to rise by more than £100 a year.

Join CETEx (Centre for Economic Transition Expertise) and The Transition Pathway Initiative Centre (TPI Centre) on February 26th for an event exploring how governments will raise the necessary funds for the low-carbon transition. The event will feature reflections from the UK’s Green Gilt programme, focusing on how it integrates mitigation, social outcomes, and cross-ministry collaboration. Panellists will outline key features of “investable” Nationally Determined Contributions and explore real-world cases of how governments can disclose financing needs and climate-related spending, drawing on the Assessing Sovereign Climate-related Opportunities and Risks project. Today, the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change published its new report ‘Scaling up carbon dioxide removals – Recommendations for navigating opportunities and risks in the EU’. The Advisory Board makes important recommendations to policy makers, advocated by LSE's Grantham Research Institute, including: - Ensuring robust and transparent MRV within the Carbon Removals Certification Framework - Progressive sequencing of removals into the #EUETS The report also heavily cites leading carbon removal experts at the Institute, Leo Mercer and Josh Burke FRSA, including their research on MRV https://lnkd.in/eahrvfTZ and how to integrate permanent removals into emissions trading schemes https://lnkd.in/e4eup6qh #carbondioxideremoval #mrv #crcf

The new case study from the GRI's Just Transition Finance Lab explores how Spain’s Just Transition Institute (ITJ) has developed a series of tenders linking grid access for renewables to job creation and social and environmental programmes. “Spain’s just transition tender programme is an innovative approach to mobilising finance for social outcomes linked to the phase-out of coal and expansion of renewables. The tender uses a regulatory mechanism to channel private sector funding into specified just transition activities.” Nick Robins, Executive Director of the Just Transition Finance Lab. Find out more about Spain’s just transition energy tenders here ⬇️

President Trump entered office a month ago. The executive orders signed in his first days have eliminated over 70 of the Biden administration’s climate and energy initiatives. Trump’s orders to leave the Paris Agreement and “terminate the Green New Deal” will have far-reaching implications for climate governance and action in the United States and globally, but giving up is not an option, writes Timo Leiter.

A new study by the GRI and Columbia University has found that a UK government subsidy towards an indoor air pollution monitor could lead to savings of up to £40 billion. Researchers Sefi Roth and Robert Metcalfe found that the “productivity increases that go back to the Government more than offsets the upfront subsidy cost”. This would result from increased tax revenue from higher earnings and also significant reductions in healthcare spending by the NHS.
