A previously overlooked aspect of GRC-cladding products Our new report: A Practical Guide to Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) Facing Coats was developed in response to the increasing popularity of facing coats containing decorative aggregates as an architectural finish for GRC cladding products over the past decade. This is not covered in either the GRCA Specification or EN standards for GRC. The new GRCA Design Guide is the first document published in the UK or Europe considering this subject. It is, however, an integral part of quality control in the USA where PCI-MNL-130 references facing coats. As such the #GRCA felt that an understanding of how this important aspect needed to be considered at both design and manufacturing stages would be useful for anyone involved in projects featuring GRC. One of the most crucial points highlighted in the report is the distinction between GRC-facing coats and the GRC composite itself. “GRC-facing coats are a separate material to the GRC composite and require different considerations in regards material properties and testing procedures,” says Bob Faulding, technical director of The GRC Centre. The guide brings attention to an oft-overlooked aspect of GRC cladding. “The facing coat is the only part of GRC cladding products that is actually visible. As such, everyone needs to be aware they not only need to look aesthetically pleasing but can also perform with minimal maintenance for the life of building (typically 50 years),” Faulding points out. He adds, “Everyone should fully consider how the facing coat will behave in-service. Probably the two most important areas are correct application and ensuring compatibility between the facing coat and the GRC composite.” The guide is designed for a broad audience within the construction industry. "Everyone involved in GRC projects – developers, architects, main contractors, façade specialists, installers, repair companies and of course manufacturers", says Faulding. He adds, "Manufacturers should adopt the recommendations of the guide, while end users should insist they are followed in their specifications for GRC products.” With the recent publication of the new EN standards for GRC and now this guide, the industry should expect more publications of this ilk in the future. For example, says Faulding, "The forthcoming GRCA Practical Design Guide will expand on how facing coats need to be considered by design engineers.” The guide is downloadable now from the GRCA website: https://lnkd.in/etFkYUfF

Fibre-reinforced polymer composites market set for significant growth The global fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites market is poised for substantial expansion over the next decade, according to a new industry analysis. The market, valued at £71.37bn in 2023, is projected to reach £148.56bn by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 7.6%. The Asia-Pacific region led the market in 2023, with a 43.59% share. Meanwhile, the US is expected to see significant growth, with its FRP composites market forecasted to reach £34.17bn by 2032.
