How wonderful are these hats?! Take a look at this brilliant collaboration with our GOSH Arts team, GOSH Play Team, and the National Theatre, who together recently hosted screenings of 'I Want My Hat Back' in our ward playrooms, along with a creative hat-making workshop. Thanks to the creative handiwork of our patients, many toy animals on our wards are now proudly sporting their very own red, pointy hats! 🎨 We know how valuable it is to bring cultural experiences and a sense of normalcy to children and families here at Great Ormond Street Hospital, especially for those staying with us for a long time. These experiences offer joy during challenging times, so we’re thrilled to partner with the National Theatre to bring this fantastic children’s play directly to our patients. 💙 Families can also access the play on our bedside entertainment system until mid-November, so patients and their loved ones can enjoy this wonderful theatre experience in their own time, around their child’s treatment schedules. Huge thanks to our friends at the National Theatre for making this possible!

About us
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. It aspires to offer outcomes for children in the top five in the world. The largest centre in the UK for children with heart or brain problems, and, with UCLH it is the largest centre in Europe for children with cancer. It is the only specialist Biomedical Research Centre for paediatrics, it works in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH), part of University College London, and together they form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK, and one of the largest in the world. The hospital at Great Ormond Street is the only exclusively specialist children's hospital in the UK. It does not have an Accident and Emergency department and largely only accepts specialist referrals from other hospitals and community services. The population of children served by the hospital is characterised by those with multiple disabilities and/or health problems and rare and congenital (present at birth) conditions.

At just 13, George is a passionate advocate for disability rights. ✨ In honour of International Day of People with Disabilities, we’re celebrating George’s remarkable impact. He’s worked to double wheelchair-accessible secondary schools in his area, modelled inclusive school uniforms to promote diversity, campaigned for accessible playgrounds, and shared virtual physiotherapy sessions with the SMA community. ♿👕🎮 George’s vision is a world where diversity in books, TV, and film leads to inclusion for everyone, saying, “Inclusivity isn’t just a positive for people with disabilities; it’s a positive for everyone.” 🌍📚📺 This year, George was recognised with two prestigious awards: Positive Role Model for Disability at the National Diversity Awards and a finalist spot at the Disability Power 100 awards, where his contributions were celebrated. 🙌🏆 Diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 2 at two, his care team here at GOSH, including Dr Manzur, Dr Scoto, and physiotherapist Marion Main, has been integral to supporting him and his family throughout his journey. Reflecting on his experience, George says, “I’ll always be grateful for the help and love the team has given me. GOSH is a wonderful hospital and has been a big part of my childhood.” 💙🏥 Looking to the future, George aspires to become an engineer, designing innovative equipment for wheelchair users like himself. 🛠️ He’s just getting started, and we can’t wait to see what he achieves next for children, young people, and adults alike. 👏✨ #DisabilityAdvocacy #RepresentationMatters #Inclusion #IDPWD

What a brilliant weekend of networking and learning! 🤝 In early November we hosted 70 early career researchers at our fifth NIHR GOSH BRC Academic Training Weekend. Attendees joined from over 30 institutes and trusts from across the UK and included nurses, doctors, scientists, allied health professionals, surgeons, midwives, healthcare scientists and many other healthcare professionals. All our attendees were researchers working to improve the lives of children and young people through clinical and laboratory-based research programmes. Hosted by NIHR GOSH BRC and Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, the aim of the weekend was to support and empower them on their research journey as they transition towards becoming independent researchers. Across the weekend they heard from senior researchers about their experience and tips for navigating the research process. Topics ranged from communicating research to successfully pitching to funding panels, as well as how to ensure inclusivity and meaningfully involve the patient and public in their work. Attendees also had the opportunity to connect across institutions, helping to build future collaborations across different professions and specialties. We would like to thank all the speakers and attendees from the weekend for making the event such a huge success! Read our reflections on the weekend: https://lnkd.in/eTbDieGb
