We are really pleased to be shortlisted as a Finalist in the Best Local Authority category at the 2024 TET (ThorntonEducationTrust) Inspiring Future Generations Awards. We are committed to supporting our children and young people's development through the delivery of child-friendly places and facilities via our YES Design Workshops, Mentoring Programmes, Work Experience Programmes and Apprenticeship Schemes. Our Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service Youth Engagement Service (YES) Team have been working tirelessly to ensure CYP have a genuine voice in the design of developments, and that their designs are actually embedded and delivered to provide tangible benefits. This is in addition to the wide range of educational programmes we provide to our CYP to engage them in the learning of architecture, urban design, town planning and public art, subjects that are not normally taught in a traditional classroom setting. We hope the excellent examples showcased in our submission will help inspire other Local Planning Authorities to commit resources to enable the building of healthy neighbourhoods for our children and young people. Thank you to the developers, planning agents, school headteachers and of course to the children and young people who engaged with us, co-designed elements in the development sites near their schools, and the students who took part in our 2-week Work Experience Programme this year. These awards recognise and celebrate outstanding initiatives that are bridging the gap between the built environment and young people. Since 2017, GCSP has been pioneering transformative ways of approaching youth engagement and architecture education to deliver social value through its Youth Engagement Service (YES). YES is formed by a small team of dedicated Officers and Bob (our mascot), sponsored by our YES champions Heather Jones FCIOB FCABE FInstLM AIFireE FRSA, Councillors Dr. Tumi Hawkins and Katie Thornburrow, who are passionate about youth engagement, and are committed to making a real difference to our communities. Our ‘Have Your Say’, ‘Our Public Art’ and ‘Let’s Create’ programmes were launched in 2017, 2020 and 2023, respectively. They are designed based on the ‘Framework for Evaluating the Effectiveness of Youth Engagement’, created by YES Lead Dr. Bonnie Kwok FRSA as part of the outcome of her PhD research in 2017, the GCSP Statement of Community Involvement and our newly published YES Social Value Statement. Our youth engagement activities are mostly delivered in the form of 2-day workshops, co-designed with schoolchildren & the developer’s design team. Since 2013, GCSP has been running a structured 2-week Work Experience Programme annually to enable Year 10 & 11 students to gain work experience in architecture & urban design to help inform their university and career options. Thank you to Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service Design Review Panel Members Maggie Baddeley (Chair), Helen Goodwin PhD, Nicolas Tye, Tahmina Begum, Edward Leigh, Shikha Bhardwaj, Ian Johnson and vanessa ross for contributing your expertise in architecture, landscape design, community development, urban design, transport, access and sustainability, and providing constructive feedback at our Design Review meeting on 28 November 2024. The scheme was for a residential development in Cambridge. The Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service Design Review Panel draws from over 50 knowledgeable and experienced panellists who provide high-quality, independent advice based on our 4C design review framework: Character, Community, Connectivity and Climate, which make up the cornerstones of the 'Cambridgshire Quality Charter for Growth'. The Panel Members act as a critical friend: they provide impartial expert advice to developers on the design element of new development proposals. The desired outcome being high-quality sustainable design that sits well, and is pleasing to our communities when built out. On 13 November 2024, Officers from the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service Built & Natural Environment (BNE) Team: Trovine Monteiro, Dr. Bonnie Kwok FRSA, Dr. Dan Weaver, Emma Lilley and Daniel Tritton provided a series of training sessions to Bedford Borough Council's Planning Department colleagues covering the following topics: 1. Introduction to Design Review 2. The basics of Biodiversity Net Gain 3. How to evaluate a Landscape & Visual Impact Assessment We pride ourselves in being one of the few Local Planning Authorities in the UK in having a highly skilled multi-disciplinary Built & Natural Environment Team, covering: - Urban Design - Landscape Architecture - Ecology - Trees - Heritage - Sustainability - Design Review service via our Greater Cambridge Design Review Panel - Youth Engagement via our award-winning Greater Cambridge Youth Engagement Service (YES) There was a good turn out and our training sessions were very well received. We ran a fun quiz at the end of the training sessions to help consolidate learning outcomes, and we're pleased to share that all Bedford colleagues obtained excellent scores in the quiz and won some amazing prizes! 📣 South Cambridge Science Centre Sawston - Public Art Progress Update: 🥳 Following a series of successful public art youth engagement workshops facilitated by our award-winning Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service Youth Engagement Service (YES) this summer, we are pleased to share a progress update with everyone: 👨🏼🎨 The selected artist Harry gray is making excellent progress on the sculpture 'The Seed'. Made from limestone from Portland from a Somerset quarry, the basic form of the 4m high sculpture is now complete. The next stage will involve incorporating local children and parents' designs into the sculpture to achieve genuine public participation. 💡 The sculpture will be sited in a prominent public space in front of the South Cambridge Science Centre, a Research and Development building at the Dales Manor Business Park in South Cambridgeshire. It will support the international science community in the Greater Cambridge region. 🌱 The inspiration for 'The Seed' comes from considering the innovative nature of the life science industry which strives for scientific growth through research and so the concept of the seed and its starting point for growth in nature was identified. This was then linked to the surrounding farmland which produces barley among other produce. 📗 In accordance with the 'South Cambridgeshire Local Plan' Public Art policies, our YES Team worked collaboratively with the developer, the planning agent and the design team to ensure the local community has a meaningful input into the public art process. 🤝 Many thanks to Neil Grosse Spencer Bramwell from Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd Abstract Securities Ltd MLA Studio | Meta Landscape Architecture Maddie Wild Emma Woods Mark Sleigh from Sphere25 Planning Agent for the great collaboration.
