“As investors, we need access to good quality, comparable data on company health-related impacts to understand this risk.” Our stewardship and engagement lead Sophie Lawrence spoke to Michael N. of PA Future about the letter that ShareAction and Long-Term Investors in People’s Health have sent to CEO’s of the largest global food and drink companies, calling for them to be more transparent about their sales of unhealthy products and therefore their impact on public health. 📢 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 & 𝗕𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 💡 Today, ShareAction and 31 investors managing over $3 trillion—including Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), Pictet Asset Management, and Nest pensions — sent a letter to six key CEOs (inc. PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, and Mondelēz International) calling on the Food and Beverage industry to be more transparent about their impact on our health. We know these companies rely heavily on selling us unhealthy food and drinks, and increased transparency would be a critical first step to holding manufacturers to account. I'm encouraged to see a growing number of investors join this call. Here's why ALL investors should be demanding robust data: ⚠️ 𝗧𝗼 𝗴𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸: Poor diets → poor health → slow economies. Obesity alone could cost the global economy $4.3tn /yr by 2035. Diversified investors, inc. pension savers, will suffer. 📜 𝗧𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸: As govs grapple with spiralling health care costs, regulatory pressure grows - but investors don't know their exposure. In the UK, we hear increasing calls for unhealthy food taxes, ( 👀UK House of Lords and IPPR), and even in the US, the proposed new HHS Sec, RFK Jr, has promised to reign in the junk. 🥗𝗧𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 a 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Consumers are increasingly demanding healthier foods, and companies who fail to cater to them will fade away. 💨 Investors need data to assess how companies are preparing—or failing to adapt. 🔍 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮, 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸: As per Greenbank Investments's Sophie Lawrence: “Where companies report, they often use inconsistent metrics. This hinders our ability to understand progress and identify risks. Mandatory, standardized reporting is essential.” 🌍 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 and instead work to support healthier societies while safeguarding their own long-term success. The final round of international negotiations (INC-5) for the UN Global Plastics Treaty will take place in Busan, Republic of Korea from 25 November to 1 December 2024. We are proud to be one of the signatories of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Private Financial Sector's Statement advocating for an ambitious UN Plastics Treaty which recognises the urgent need for collective action against plastic pollution – a critical challenge for our planet. The world is facing a triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The rapid rise in plastic production and consumption, particularly single-use items, poses a severe threat not only to our ecosystems but also to human health and rights. There is a pressing need for a comprehensive treaty that not only addresses the full lifecycle of plastic but also fosters a circular economy. Click below to read the Financial Sector Statement. On Wednesday 11 December 12.00pm – 12.45pm, we will be hosting our next live lunchtime webinar ‘Tackling Plastic pollution’ with guest speaker John Duncan global initiative lead, No Plastics in Nature Initiative at WWF and co-lead of Business For A Plastics Treaty to discuss this topic further. Greenbank’s stewardship and engagement lead Sophie Lawrence attended the official launch of the UK House of Lords Food, Diet and Obesity Committee Report, at the House of Commons. The Investor Coalition on Food Policy gave evidence to the Committee in April and are pleased to see several of their recommendations featured in the final report, including the need to introduce mandatory health targets for food companies. It's not everyday that you get the chance to be interviewed by the UK's #3 most popular Business podcast! 😍 I had the immense pleasure to share my and Better Nature's story on the Inspired Sounds podcast by Rathbones Asset Management the other week. But I can't help but feel some serious imposter syndrome 😅 Previous guests on Inspired Sounds include INCREDIBLE entrepreneurs such as Barney😜 Mauleverer - Co-Founder of FUEL10K, Nick Jenkins - Founder of Moonpig, and Darcy Laceby - Co-Founder of Absolute Collagen 😱 So to be invited to speak and share my story with Better Nature was truly a pinch moment! Thank you so much for having me on the podcast Colin Monton. I hope that there are at least a few nuggets of wisdom in there that aspiring entrepreneurs can take away and apply to their own journeys. If you're interested in learning more about my journey or those of other far more credible entrepreneurs, tune in to the podcast - link below!
