We had a lovely time attending the Barbri Future Lawyers Convention at Aston University last week. The day began with an inspiring keynote address by Lubna Shuja, former President of the Law Society of England and Wales, setting the tone for a day filled with interactive and informative sessions regarding the SQE, careers in law, communications skills and much more. We were also delighted to have two of our first seat trainees, Anna G. and Alexandra Percy, take part in the panel discussion around commercial awareness. They shared their insights and top tips on staying commercially aware, discussed the value of gaining paralegal experience before sitting the SQE, and highlighted the many benefits of training at #GTLondon. A huge thank you to the BARBRI SQE Prep team and Aston University for having us and for hosting such an informative event. 💡

On 19 November 2024, the Law Commission published its first consultation paper which forms part of their two-stage review of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 and focuses on the security business tenants should have in today’s commercial leasehold market. Is the legislation which gives business tenants a right to automatically renew their leases unless they agree with their landlord to exclude this right through the “contracting out” process, still fit for purpose? #GTLondon’s Sue Wilson, Ailish Winch (née Foad) & Rachel Whittaker consider the Law Commission’s paper in more detail including the pros and cons of the four different models of security of tenure the Law Commission has presented, together with the Law Commission’s proposed next steps.
