Reflecting on the first six months of BNG, Chris Kaighin the Deputy Director, Biodiversity Net Gain Services – has written an article reflecting on the initial 6 months of BNG becoming mandatory for most planning applications. Good to see the first sale of a statutory BNG credit. Hopefully, the funds from this and future sales will go towards the much-needed funding of environmental conservation work in the UK. However, for us to see real stabilised recovery of biodiversity across the UK it’s important that statutory BNG credits are treated as the last possible option for developers in their Biodiversity strategy. It’s fair to say that Britain is in the middle of an environmental emergency, with extensive research showing a rapid decline in biodiversity across the country. Alarmingly, Natural England are reporting that nearly 1 in 6 species are now threatened with extinction. Its therefore important that Developers embrace last year’s planning legislation change to achieve a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain on all planning applications. This is where we can help. Our unique working approach alongside farmers and landowners provides a socially responsible solution to providing habitat banks that help the recovery of biodiversity across the UK and provides an essential boost to the rural economy. With the Labour Government's recently announced housing targets and an accompanying review of the green belt to create a new “grey belt” land category, it’s clear this will have a significant impact on the UK’s biodiversity. With land values still at a premium across the country, a combination of both on-site and off-site offsetting will be essential to help developers mitigate their impacts on biodiversity, whilst still maximising their ability to make schemes viable and deliver the new housing that the UK desperately needs.
