👷♂️ Meet the Team: Henry Duncan - Director / Design Manager 🌿 Henry joined Greenheart as a site carpenter in 2007 and later pursued Architectural Technology at UWE, and more recently qualified as a Passivhaus consultant. His journey has been instrumental in guiding Greenheart towards our innovative design and build model, blending years of hands-on experience with pioneering design. Constructed with Douglas Fir portal frames and wrapped in a well-insulated timber frame, this new-build office features a café, drawing studio, potting shed, and office mezzanine, all with a polished concrete floor for a sleek, contemporary look. 🌿 Project Spotlight: Larkrise, Stroud 🌿 At Greenheart, we’re dedicated to creating sustainable homes that merge design, efficiency, and lifestyle. Our Larkrise project in Stroud is a prime example. Our client, drawn by stunning views of the Bristol Channel, had to choose between remodelling an existing bungalow or a complete rebuild. After exploring both options, the decision was clear: a new build allowed for better positioning on the plot, creating generous exterior spaces and optimising the valley views. Guided by Passivhaus principles, we focused on insulation, airtightness, and minimising the environmental footprint. The result? A beautiful split-level home that harmonises with its surroundings, featuring an airy interior and uplifting views. As Passivhaus is widely recognised to be the highest ecological building standard, it seemed obvious to aim for this level of performance. After speaking to a number of people in this field, Greenheart’s name came up and it quickly became apparent that they were very familiar with exactly the type of build we were hoping to construct. It was because of this track record that we soon decided to forgo Passivhaus certification. The trust we put in Greenheart has paid off and we have a building that not only meets our desire for the performance standards associated with Passivhaus, but actually exceeds them. 🏡 RE-Introducing Priory Garden, Bath: A contemporary family home built in 2012 to Passivhaus standards on a challenging site overlooking Bath. This project was a collaboration between Greenheart and pad Design paddesign-design-develop-deliver. We aimed to create a spacious family home using Passivhaus techniques and materials. Despite the site's difficult access and the need for significant Piled foundations to retain neighbouring houses and ground above, we succeeded with some innovative solutions: 🔹 25 concrete piles (600mm each) buried 4/5m deep to form a retaining wall and underground storeroom. 🔹 Installation of a sewage pump system due to the site being approximately 4m lower than existing drains. 🔹 Super insulated 350mm timber frame with Glulam timbers for main structural elements. 🔹 Stone rainscreen on the ground floor and Siberian Larch cladding on the upper storey. The house features: ✨ Triple glazed Rationel and Ideal Combi windows. ✨ Vitral rooflight on the flat Sedum roof. ✨ Whole house MVHR system with PAUL Novus 300 unit. ✨ Minimal background heating upstairs and underfloor heating downstairs. Although not Passivhaus certified, the house was modelled through the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) and achieved an impressive air test result of 0.4ACH @50PA. Here’s what the homeowners had to say: “Sitting back in our new house, after facing the combined challenges of a difficult site and a limited window, we are so pleased that we chose Greenheart. The quality of the workmanship and their attention to detail cannot be faulted. Although we didn’t necessarily set out to build an exceptional modern house, that is what we have got.
