Working across the West Midlands to help create stronger communities.
About us
Groundwork West Midlands is the area’s foremost environmental regeneration charity. We work in the West Midlands most deprived areas to transform disadvantaged communities through high quality regeneration programmes across the West Midlands focusing our activity on communities where we can make the most difference and create projects and services that benefit both people and the wider environment A charity with an Impact Each year we make an incredible impact on the people and places in the West Midlands. Our local programmes and services are tailored to the needs of partners and communities in the area but when all that local activity is added together, it also becomes a major national force for change. Working locally We start local with the people who live there and then seek to put the right tools in people’s hands. We make sure we engage with everyone who has a stake in a place or a project and then we work as hard as we can to address as many issues as possible with the same investment helping people and organisations make changes to create better neighbourhoods, to build skills and job prospects, and to live and work in a greener way Groundwork West Midlands truly does change lives and change places

The land team at Groundwork West Midlands has been collaborating with volunteers to revitalize a memorial garden at Walsall Manor Hospital. This restoration will enhance an internal courtyard, creating a tranquil, nature-filled space for staff to reflect and find peace. With funding from Natural England, the Land team and hospital volunteers will work together to enhance biodiversity throughout the hospital. The plans for the area include removing old plants and vegetation, constructing raised beds, building a willow arbour, assembling garden furniture, and planting new greenery. If you are part of Walsall Manor Hospital and wish to participate, volunteer sessions will take place every Wednesday from 10 AM to 3 PM. A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who have contributed so far; your support is instrumental in restoring this garden, providing staff with a place to remember family, friends, and colleagues they have lost.

As part of SEGRO’s Community Investment Plan, the Groundwork West Midlands team took on the renovation of the aging sensory garden at Baginton Field School. Over ten years old, the garden had become outdated, dull, and unsafe for wheelchair users, making it no longer suitable for its purpose. The Groundwork team dedicated a total of 18 days over several weeks to work alongside 16-19 year-old SEND students from the school, collaborating with 30 children on the renovation project. This initiative involved student volunteers, providing them with valuable skills and experience for their CVs, as well as work experience hours contributing to their life skills qualifications. With support from the volunteers, Groundwork West Midlands and staff from SERGO the garden is now fully operational. The teams worked together to install new benches and replace all walkways, ensuring accessibility for wheelchair users and those with walkers. Additionally, they enhanced the garden's aesthetics by planting new flower beds, adding a sensory wall, and repainting existing wooden structures. Their hard work has transformed the sensory garden, making it a usable space for everyone. The garden is actively being utilized by students, who will take responsibility for its maintenance alongside the teachers managing the horticulture group. Liam, one of the volunteers who participated in the project, has gained valuable experience for his CV, and the hours he volunteered count towards his life skills qualifications. He expressed that the project has inspired him to “think about the future and what I might do after school.” In January, another team from Groundwork West Midlands will return to the school to conduct Cook and Eat Well sessions, aimed at supporting students transitioning to independent living with essential cooking skills and healthy eating education. A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who contributed to the restoration of the sensory garden.
