🌟 Yesterday, the iCan Career Fair gave our team a chance to connect with local young people, parents, and carers, helping to navigate the exciting (and sometimes challenging) transition from school to further education or employment. 💡 What the Event Was About Designed to support young people in East Sussex facing barriers to employment, this inclusive event provided tailored guidance to explore career paths, training programs, and accessible opportunities. 💼 At Roadways, we take pride in supporting initiatives like these. Here's how we contributed: 1️⃣ Showcasing Opportunities: Our team shared career paths, apprenticeships, and supported employment options, highlighting how anyone can thrive in the highways industry with the right support. 2️⃣ Interactive Minecraft Sessions: Alan and I conducted fun, hands-on sessions that engaged attendees and brought our industry to life in a creative and accessible way. 3️⃣ PPE Booth: We showcased the tools of the trade and the importance of safety in the workplace—an essential aspect of any career in highways. 💬 "We believe in creating opportunities for everyone, regardless of the challenges they face. Events like iCan are crucial in bridging the gap between education and employment." While attendance was lower than anticipated, the engagement and enthusiasm of those who attended made it all worthwhile. 🚀 Roadways are Paving the Way for Women in Highways! 🚧 Here is Irma’s Journey of breaking barriers as Roadways’ first female construction plant operator. According to Irma, a former pharmaceutical manager and motorbike enthusiast, this journey was "like a dream come true". Since joining Roadways only 3 months ago, she’s gained skills in excavator operation, road construction, kerbing, block paving, and drainage. Now Irma is training as a dumper, road planer, and skid steer driver. When Victoria Vasiliauskaite, Roadways’ director, saw a post about a woman completing Excavator 360 CPCS training, she knew she had to act. Determined to “walk the talk” on bringing more women into construction, Victoria offered Irma a chance to gain experience. Victoria says: “Investing in women in construction isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s about long-term vision. Just as we innovate with road products and services, we’re committed to building a diverse and efficient workforce.” Irma credits Roadways’ welcoming, supportive culture for her rapid growth, alongside nationally recognised accreditation ans qualifications. Originally from #Lithuania, Irma is grateful for Victoria’s mentorship as a key factor in her success. Victoria, who has spent 20 years mentoring young Lithuanian professionals, provided encouragement and guidance that made Irma feel truly valued and inspired. “I never thought this could happen. Victoria gave me a chance to follow my passion, and the support I’ve received from Roadways has been incredible. 🌧️ Our teams kept East Sussex safe during storm Bert 💪 This weekend, Storm Bert threw everything at us— over 80 calls for help, including 🌊 floods, 63🌳 fallen trees, street furniture blocking roads, car accidents, and other hazards. ⚠️ The storm lasted 1.5 days longer than forecasted, but East Sussex Highways duty officers and our incredible Reactive Maintenance teams rose to the challenge. Huge thanks to our operatives who changed their family plans to come out in the wind and rain to help. By adding extra crews and working tirelessly, they 🚧 cleared roads, ⚠️ removed dangers, and 🚨 kept the road users safe. Fast action as a 4th blue light emergency service showed once again what Reactive Maintenance is exactly all about: being ready, no matter what. 💯 A massive thank you to our teams for their dedication and to road users for your patience. 🙏 Stay safe out there!
