Be Inclusive Hospitality launch ‘Careers in Hospitality: Removing Barriers to Progression’ report Huge thanks to Lorraine Copes, Alya Lilani and the Be Inclusive Hospitality team for hosting such an insightful and inspiring breakfast event yesterday to mark the launch of their ‘Careers in Hospitality: Removing Barriers to Progression’ report. Hosted at Think Tank in London, industry leaders, HR professionals and people passionate about driving equity in the industry came together to share, listen and understand. Drawing on three years of research and fresh insight, Lorraine and Dr. Naz Ali shared key findings from the report, which uncovers the challenges facing ethnically diverse talent in hospitality. Aiming to raise awareness, foster education, and inspire action, the report highlights how the hospitality industry has made notable progress in recent years; also acknowledging there is still work to be done. Two insightful panel conversations, ‘Strategies for Change’ hosted by Lorraine, featuring Jane Grammar Dorchester Collection, Raj Jones (She/Her/Hers) Sodexo, Ceri Gott Hawksmoor, Priya Narain KERB and ‘Candid Conversations’ hosted by Olajide Alabi SISU featuring Denise Allen Benugo Holroyd Howe Notes Coffee Roasters Searcys, Raj Markandoo Bubala, Gina Knight Flat Iron, Kiran Elliott Flourish HR provided speakers with an opportunity to share lived experiences, insights from their journeys so far and perhaps most importantly, the unique opportunity we all have to make a positive difference. On Monday night, I had the absolute pleasure of presenting the award for Best Manchester Bar at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival (MFDF) Awards. A huge congrats to Hawksmoor on taking home the win! 🏆 It was a cracking night and a great excuse to show off our Game Volt Supercharged Shuffleboard in front of some of the best bars and restaurants in (objectively speaking) the greatest city on earth - Manchester. We’re ridiculously proud that all our products are designed and built right here in Manchester, so it was brilliant to share what we do with our neighbours. 🫶 How to "keep the culture" and stay special as you grow? 🫶 When I joined, Hawksmoor was small enough that culture could be transmitted over morning coffee or a short bike ride across London. Fast forward 13 years and Hawksmoor is an award-winning international brand with 13 restaurants, 1,250 people, and 13 consecutive years as a Top 100 Best Company to work for in the UK. So I get asked this a lot! 1. BE YOURSELF: We know who we are and what makes Hawksmoor special. It is the values. They stay the same; we have worked hard to find new solutions for nurturing them as we scale. In 2024, 97% people still agree they share Hawksmoor's values! 2. KEEP PROMISES: Will Beckett taught me that a brand is a "promise" and it's what people experience (not what you tell them). As an employer we make 5 "people promises", based on what we know matters to people at Hawksmoor and measure their experiences to make sure we live up to them. We look at responses by gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, and disability to make sure we're keeping our promises to everyone. 3. LOVE DATA: Data is more than a quick check for peace of mind - we use it to pinpoint areas to improve, do it & check it's worked. Even when you are small you don't know how people feel unless you ask and listen - and data is critical for having visibility when you grow. Our people stats sit alongside our financial and operational ones. 4. FREEDOM TO EVOLVE: Culture isn't stuck like a poster on the wall or "how we've always done it", it's living and breathing in people. What's special changes over time - for customers, teams and the business - and differs between countries. We protect our values but not how things are done; there's freedom for them to show up differently in London, Dublin and New York! Culture needs permission to evolve to stay healthy and inclusive. 6.
