  • Last week we shared the news that we are now offering CAR T Cell Therapy to treat myeloma, along with other types of blood cancers, including lymphoma and leukaemia. But how much do you know about how this highly specialised, immune system enhancing treatment works?    ⬇️Watch our animation for a full breakdown of how Chimeric Antigen Receptors (CARs) boost our body’s natural immune defences to track down and destroy cancer cells.    Find out more about CAR T Cell Therapy at HCA UK here: https://lnkd.in/eCEr8isA     #HCAHealthcareUK #HCAUK #Cancer #Innovation

  • ❤️ As we're nearing the end of National Heart Month, we wanted to share this remarkable patient story involving innovation, expertise and a 3D-printed heart! David had been suffering from calcification of the aortic valve and mitral valve. When the calcification in his heart valves progressed to severe levels, putting him at a higher risk of heart failure, he was referred to cardiothoracic surgeon, Mr Bahrami Toufan and consultant cardiologist, Dr Jonathan Clague at The Harley Street Clinic. David needed surgery to repair his valves. Mr Bahrami suggested an endoscopic approach, accessing the heart through a small, 3cm incision in the rib cage. The procedure itself is shorter than an open surgery and can offer a shorter recovery time and fewer complications. Keen to understand as much as he could about his procedure David, an architect by trade, used his CT scans to create a life-sized 3D model of his heart and ribcage. The 3D view also allowed David to print ‘slices’ of his heart, this meant Mr Bahrami could show David where he would be placing a clamp or making an incision, and how much calcification could be safely removed. "Having a 3D model demystified a lot for me. As my wife said, I didn’t have the usual pre-op nerves," says Mr Nelson. As we look to the future, we'll continue to drive forward our mission to care for and improve lives every day.    Here's a look back at just some of the moments, and the people, who have made this an incredible year.    Find out more about the care we provide here: https://lnkd.in/dHDk4KsT     #HCAHealthcareUK #HCAUK

  • 📣  NEW TREATMENT BREAKTHROUGH 📣 This week we are incredibly proud to announce that we are one of the first independent providers in the UK to offer CAR T-Cell Therapy to people living with myeloma.    Myeloma, also referred to as multiple myeloma, is an incurable kind of blood cancer. While there are many treatment options including stem cell transplants, drug therapies and bispecific antibodies. This is the first time a truly personalised treatment option, offering the chance of long-term remission, has been available to people with myeloma.     We first offered CAR T-Cell Therapy to patients with some types of lymphoma and leukaemia in 2019, since then it’s been through more clinical trials, and has most recently been approved to treat myeloma.     Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eyhd7cA8   📸 Some the of specialist haematology team at HCA Healthcare UK at University College Hospital, where this treatment has launched. We are proud to be one of only a handful of hospitals in the UK to be able to offer patients access to Amyloid-targeting therapies, that have been found to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in people with mild cognitive impairment or mild Alzheimer’s disease.   Amyloid-targeting therapies work by targeting a protein in the brain called amyloid beta, an important protein involved in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. By triggering your immune system to remove amyloid beta, amyloid-targeting therapies can help slow the progression of the disease.   Both Lecanemab and Donanemab have been tested in large clinical trials to understand their safety and efficacy in patients with early Alzheimer’s disease. After 18 months of treatment, amyloid-targeting therapies slowed the rate of disease progression by up to nearly one third.    Find out more about these ground-breaking therapies, including eligibility criteria here; https://lnkd.in/eNgfmVNc

  • 💙 This National Heart Month we will be sharing how, across our network of Hospitals, we are caring for cardiac patients. Patients like Steve, pictured here. When Steve started experiencing breathlessness he did not consider the root cause could be his heart. After initially being treated by his local hospital for a chest infection, his symptoms returned. That’s when Steve decided to use his private medical insurance for the first time—leading him to Professor Sagar Doshi BSc MBChB FRCP MD FACC, Consultant Cardiologist at The Harborne Hospital . He was diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis, a condition that can be fatal if left untreated. Steve was recommended for a minimally invasive procedure called a TAVI, which can be offered as an alternative to open heart surgery. Tavi is performed under local anaesthetic, it involves a catheter being passed through through small puncture in the leg and up into the aortic valve. Using the catheter, a new valve is put inside the heart, and is then expanded to replace the old valve. On the results of his procedure Steve remarked; “The best way I can describe it is like someone flicking a switch. From not being able to do anything to feeling so much better, I can’t explain it – the difference was amazing! I’m now walking five- or six-thousand steps a day no problem! It’s life-changing, it really is.” Read more about cardiac care at HCA UK here: https://lnkd.in/egdN4UvS #HCAHealthcareUK #PatientStory #HeartHealth #TAVI #LifeChangingCare #TheHarborneHospital #NationalHeartMonth
