We’ve got barrels of fun from India Buildings in Edinburgh for #FindsFriday this week. The unique preservation conditions onsite at India Buildings led to a wealth of waterlogged wooden material. Several barrel lined pits, possibly for either water or tanning use, were among the preserved wooden items. Scratch marks on the barrels indicated they were likely used for trade before being re-used onsite. Dendrochronological dating from four of these barrels revealed dates from the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Analysis of the wood also revealed the barrels originated from both the Loire and Meuse Valleys in France. However, a single stave from the Loire barrel was made of Eastern Baltic timber, indicating that it may have been repaired in Edinburgh using imported wood.
