Find out how early client engagement enabled us to supply 150,000 tonnes of aggregate from our Machen quarry in south Wales in just 10 weeks to help create a sustainable energy park. The material was delivered to the site of the former Uskmouth coal fired power station by rail, cutting the infrastructure programme by a massive 87% and delivering a 30% carbon reduction over road transportation. Decarbonising asphalt production in the UK with hydrogen. We use asphalt every day from the roads we drive on to our footpaths, airport runways and playgrounds. But, as with many manufacturing processes, its production currently relies on the use of fossil fuels such as natural gas as the temperatures required cannot be achieved through electrification. We are proactively looking at innovations that can help us decarbonise our production processes. That’s why, at our Criggion asphalt plant in mid-Wales, we will be running a trial to show that hydrogen can replace the mix of fossil fuels currently used in asphalt production. It’s an exciting time and we are hopeful that the project will demonstrate another key step forward towards the decarbonisation of our industry. Watch the video to find out more. Our Criggion quarry in mid-Wales is set to lead the way in decarbonising asphalt production using hydrogen. We have already successfully shown that hydrogen can be used as part of a net zero fuel mix at our cement works in Ribblesdale, Lancashire, but its use as a fuel at an asphalt site has not yet been physically demonstrated in the UK. A massive well done to the 200 employees who took part in our health and wellbeing challenge to race around the world in 30 days🌎 They powered through rain and snow, and between them ran, walked and cycled an impressive 25,015 miles. 👏 Congratulations to winners Packed Products Director Andrew Simpson, who walked 346 miles, and Sales Manager Marie Finch, who ran 146 miles. The challenge encouraged our team to stay active to help boost energy, reduce stress and improve overall mental and physical health. #HealthSafetyAndWellbeing #HeidelbergMaterialsUK #RaceAroundTheWorld #OneTeam #EmployeeWellbeing

We make essential materials to build our future and decarbonising is a responsibility we take very seriously. Fuel switching to hydrogen is a key priority in our roadmap to net zero by 2050. At our Criggion plant in mid-Wales, we are trialling hydrogen as a fuel for asphalt production to remove one of the biggest carbon emitters in the production process. We are proud to partner with several other industry leaders through Made With Hydrogen, a consortium of British manufacturers dedicated to securing our sustainable future and protecting jobs in the UK. Keep an eye out for updates as we share more on how we plan to use hydrogen to decarbonise our operations over the coming months.
