🔬 Which PDMS Bonding Method Works Best? A Comparison for Microfluidics 🔬 If you’ve worked with PDMS bonding, you know the challenge: - Weak adhesion leads to delamination and leakage - Inconsistent bonding affects device performance - Complex methods can slow down fabrication While plasma treatment is a leading solution, how does it compare to traditional methods? Let’s break it down. Surface Preparation for High-Resolution Influenza Genome Imaging Research A recent bioRxiv preprint uses high-throughput DNA-PAINT to study the influenza A virus genome. Researchers from the University of Oxford and the University of Warwick analysed over 10,000 virus particles, gaining insights into genome packaging and its role in viral evolution and reassortment. These findings could inform future research on virus assembly and outbreak control strategies. For sample preparation, the team used the Henniker Plasma HPT-100 system to plasma clean glass coverslips, improving surface cleanliness for high-resolution imaging. While our plasma system played a small role in this research, it contributed to the precise sample preparation needed for high-resolution imaging. Studies like these highlight the importance of surface preparation techniques in advanced microscopy and virology research. Enhancing Cardiovascular Implants with Precision Surface Chemistry A study by Loughborough University, published in J Biomedical Materials Research, highlights advancements in cardiovascular implants through precision organosilane surface modifications. This research focuses on selectively promoting endothelial cell growth while suppressing smooth muscle cell proliferation — critical factors in reducing thrombosis risk and improving implant integration. Key insights from the study: - Selective Surface Chemistry: Amine-modified surfaces significantly enhance endothelial cell proliferation, while simultaneously limiting smooth muscle cell activity. - Advanced Plasma Activation: Oxygen plasma treatment (Henniker Plasma HPT-200) plays a role in preparing glass coverslips, ensuring superior bonding and bioactivity. Modification Process Summary 1. Plasma Activation: HPT-200 2-minute oxygen plasma treatment at 60 W 2. Organosilane Treatment: Various chemistries were used, including: - Methyl (-CH₃): Dimethyldichlorosilane (DCDMS) - Amine (-NH₂): 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) - Thiol (-SH): 3-Mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) Increased Surface Hydrophobicity: Wettability tests showed a marked rise in contact angle, indicating enhanced surface hydrophobicity post-modification. The Bigger Picture This research showcases the power of plasma-enhanced surface chemistry to refine cell-specific interactions, paving the way for safer and more effective cardiovascular implants. The Henniker Plasma HPT-200 achieved precise chemical bonding, reinforcing its value in high-impact biomedical innovation.
