We are proud to have been named Infrastructure & Energy and Insurance Firm of the Year at The Oath Legal Magazine Middle East Awards. We were also highly commended in the Employment, Banking & Finance, and Kuwait Firm of the Year categories. The awards are judged by an independent panel of senior in-house counsel, and celebrate firms that "stand out for their outstanding contributions" and that are "revolutionising the region". HFW has been in the Middle East since 2006 and we now have 20 partners and 60 lawyers in total across our offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait City, and Riyadh, making ours one of the largest and longest-standing practices of any international law firm in the region. We recently strengthened our Kuwait practice with the hire of Partner Kashif Syed – our fifth Middle East Partner hire over the past two years – and established a new entity in Saudi Arabia as one of a select group of international law firms to have received a license from the Saudi Ministry of Justice to practice in the Kingdom. Yesterday evening, HFW's Dubai office held its first Dubai Associates Alliance event. Clients joined associates for Topgolf with sharing platters to refuel in between rounds which provided a great opportunity to mingle and network, amongst a bit of light-hearted competition with one another. It was an excellent turn-out and an evening enjoyed by all in attendance. Thank you to all of our clients for making our first Dubai Associates Alliance event such a great success. #DubaiAssociatesAlliance #LawFirm #Networking

On November 22, HFW partner Justin Sun attended the UK-Greater Bay Area Conference, hosted by the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) in Shenzhen, China. The event brought together over 200 delegates, including senior representatives from the British Government, local governments across the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and senior executives from British and Chinese companies based in the UK, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Throughout the event, participants delved into critical topics related to the development of the Greater Bay Area, such as technological innovation, ESG, international cooperation, and trade and investment opportunities for British companies in the region. The conference placed particular emphasis on Hong Kong's strategic role in fostering international cooperation. During the conference, CBBC announced the formation of the Greater Bay Area Working Group and introduced its first industry subgroup, the Low Altitude Economic Industries Group. As one of the founding members, HFW was instrumental in establishing the CBBC Greater Bay Area Working Group – Low Altitude Economy Industry Group. Justin Sun, Chief Representative of HFW's Shenzhen office, attended the inauguration ceremony of the Low Altitude Economy Industry Group. #GreaterBayArea #China #ESG #trade

What is the future of AI in dispute resolution? The forthcoming era of arbitration and litigation poses a crucial question: Should, or let’s now fully integrate it, how specifically should lawyers leverage assistive technology to suit their case needs and improve existing practices, while avoiding legal malpractice? HFW's Dan Perera recently shared his views with the American Bar Association, where he sees the automation of quasi-administrative tasks such as filling out standard template forms, drafting notices, simple correspondence, and scheduling hearing dates as being on the horizon. In due course, even the pre-dispute assessment of merits may be handled through automation. Dan also highlights that AI models, powered by vast data sets, will soon play a crucial role in insurers’ risk assessment and quantum modeling. However, the accuracy of these models will heavily depend on the data and assumptions they are built upon — a contentious point that will likely be a major source of dispute. You can read the article here (subscription required): https://lnkd.in/gGJhJVgi To discuss these issues, please speak to Dan or your usual HFW contact. #Litigation #InternationalArbitration #AI #LegalMalpractice #Technology

We were pleased to welcome clients in Dubai for a seminar on the UAE's new Insurance Brokers' Regulations - the most important restatement and development of the law in a decade. HFW insurance partner John Barlow covered how the new regulation - which comes into force on 15 February 2025 - will impact brokers and insurers. For brokers, we looked at what now constitutes broking activity, and why certain activities not carried out by brokers will now fall within the regulations, as well as some of the new opportunities the regulations will present to brokers. For insurers, we covered where the responsibilities lie for payment of premiums under the new regulations. John and fellow HFW insurance partner Samuel W. would like to thank our clients for making it such a well-attended event, and for their input which led to a valuable discussion. #InsuranceBrokersRegulations #Insurance #InsuranceIndustry #UAEInsurance #InsuranceBrokers #InsuranceLaw
