About us
Homerton College is the biggest and newest College of the University of Cambridge, and home to a talented and diverse community of over 1300 students and 60 Fellows. The College was founded in London in 1768. Until 2001, Homerton was a specialist teacher-training college, but we received our Royal Charter as a full College of the University of Cambridge in 2010, and now span all subjects from Art History to Zoology.

It was a pleasure to welcome Dawn Heels to speak at our symposium titled 'Breaking the Silence About Fibroids: Addressing Inequalities in Women's Health', part of Homerton's 'Big Conversations'. By bringing together experts in this field, doctors, and patient advocates, we were able to facilitate important discussions about how together we can work towards a better future for those living with this under-researched, under-diagnosed, and under-treated condition. Thank you Dawn for your hugely valuable contribution!
In the Great Hall of Homerton College at Cambridge University, I had the honour of speaking alongside passionate advocates and experts who are determined to see meaningful change in how fibroids are managed and how women are cared for. While we continue to have vital conversations to bring this overlooked condition—fibroids—out of the shadows, my vision for 2025 is rooted in active change. Here’s what I want to see and be part of: • Guidelines for fibroid management: It’s time for clear, standardised information that helps both patients and healthcare professionals. • Accessible patient resources: At present, when women are diagnosed with fibroids, they’re left without even basic booklets or resources to guide them through this journey. This must change. • Ongoing support for women post-diagnosis and treatment: Fibroids leave lasting physical and mental health effects that cannot be ignored once surgery or treatment is over. Grassroots organisations like my not-for-profit, The Guidance Suite, are essential in providing this much-needed support, but they cannot do it alone. We need investment and collaboration to uplift these lifelines for women everywhere. Together, we must break the silence, support one another, and work tirelessly to build a future where fibroid care and awareness are no longer overlooked. Let’s make active change happen. #fibroids #uterinefibroids #cambridgeuniversity Lord Simon Woolley
