About us
Homerton College is the biggest and newest College of the University of Cambridge, and home to a talented and diverse community of over 1300 students and 60 Fellows. The College was founded in London in 1768. Until 2001, Homerton was a specialist teacher-training college, but we received our Royal Charter as a full College of the University of Cambridge in 2010, and now span all subjects from Art History to Zoology.

December 2024 saw the sad passing of a beloved member of the Homerton community, Professor Morag Styles. Morag’s relationship with Homerton College spanned over 50 years, as she embarked on the PGCE Course in 1970, before teaching at the College between 1974 and 2014. She was Primary Language Co-ordinator for some years, latterly dividing her time between research, teaching, supervision of doctoral students and co-ordinating the masters’ route, Critical Approaches to Children’s Literature at Cambridge Faculty of Education. In her lifetime she compiled many much-loved poetry anthologies for children. Morag's generous and brilliant scholarship was often expressed in inspiring and successful collaborative projects. The Caribbean Poetry Project (University of Cambridge and University of the West Indies) was one such, in which she brought together poets, academics and teachers from across the Caribbean and the UK. Morag was also a founding member of the Philippa Pearce Steering Committee which has organized an annual lecture at Homerton College by a distinguished children’s author since 2008, and she continued to take an active interest in the Homerton Cambridge Centre for the Research and Teaching of Children’s Literature.

King Charles III’s New Year’s Honours list included some familiar faces to us at Homerton College, as members of our brilliant Homerton community were recognised for their outstanding work. Homerton College alumna Dr Julie Blake (PhD Education 2013-20), was awarded the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Education. This honour was in recognition of Dr Blake’s pioneering work as co-founder and director of the nation’s premier poetry speaking competition, Poetry By Heart, which invites young people to choose a poem they love, learn it by heart, and perform it out loud. Meanwhile, former University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, an Honorary Fellow of Homerton College, was made Knight Grand Cross (GBE) for services to cancer research, clinical research, medicine and to charities. Huge congratulations to all!
