A lot happening on Hoptrail's AML Leaderboards as we move towards our annual review in December. Some interesting highlights: 👆 Revolut's UK banking license was the firm's sixth approval, adding to registrations in Spain, Italy and Lithuania, and a license in Singapore. Those approvals have moved Revolut to 2nd in our exchange category (and 7th overall). 🔼 US-based Zero Hash made a big jump on the addition of a Bermuda license and a registration in the Netherlands. Up a massive 7.1 points to 7th. ⏫ PayPal is the second Payments service in our overall Top 10 (behind dtcpay). The firm holds two licenses with NYDFS in US, as well as registrations in the UK and Luxembourg - all high-scoring jurisdictions on the World Bank's regulatory strength metric. 🔎 Unsurprisingly, global retail exchange venues generally score less well than their institutional peers. The exception to this is Blockchain.com, which sits 8th overall with licenses in Singapore and UAE and a pretty clean integrity record vs Coinbase and Kraken Digital Asset Exchange - both of which are under penalty points for regulatory fines and security breaches, respectively. 🎉 Hoptrail is three years old this week! 🎉 As some of you know, the company was born out of efforts to get my own property purchase with crypto proceeds over the line. In doing that, it occurred to me that there were probably many other people - young, first time buyers - in the same situation. So we started a company to solve that pain point, and here were are... three years in! Earlier today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), in coordination with the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) identified #PM2BTC, a Russian virtual currency exchange linked to Sergey Sergeevich Ivanov, as a "primary money laundering concern" connected to illicit Russian finance. Simultaneously, #OFAC sanctioned Ivanov and Cryptex, another virtual currency exchange operating in Russia. These actions were coordinated with other law enforcement partners, including the US Secret Service and Dutch authorities, who have taken measures such as seizing domains linked to the implicated entities. FinCEN's order targets PM2BTC for facilitating laundering of virtual currency associated with ransomware and other criminal activities, using US-sanctioned financial institutions and evading sanctions. Nearly half of PM2BTC's transactions are linked to illicit activity. Cryptex, registered in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has received over $51.2 million from ransomware attacks and processed over $720 million in transactions related to Russian cybercriminals. Ivanov, a money launderer for over 20 years, has been linked to various criminal networks, including the OFAC-designated Genesis Market.
