A new West African art exhibition at the Horniman takes its inspiration from the Benin ‘bronzes’, which were looted and displayed in Western museums such as the Horniman, and challenges perceptions of West African cultural practices. Out of Context is curated by #Yellowzine and features photographs, illustrations and AI-generated images by contemporary West African and diaspora artists Tamibe Bourdanne, osaze amadasun and HUMAN TAKES FLIGHT® by Oreoluwa Ayoade. A new Benin display, to be unveiled on 7 December, features some of the Benin objects returned to Nigerian ownership in 2022 and now on loan to the Horniman. Alongside these is a newly commissioned bronze sculpture by Benin artist Osaru Obaseki, titled Ame / Oyevbamen ‘Like Water’. The objects are displayed against a bespoke backdrop of graphic wallpaper, designed by Edo artist 12th the Creator and students at University Preparatory Secondary School in Benin City, with Museum of West African Art (MOWAA). Also accompanying the display will be a soundscape created by artist tobi Adebajo and a short film by Eden Igwe. Introducing our new Musicians in Residence! Anti.net are a punk rap and art collective from East and South East London known for their disruptive energy and genre-blurring performances. Daniel Tsz-shing Lei is a dizi flautist from Hong Kong whose artistic vision lies in merging traditional Chinese folk music with modern classical composition. Gabriel ‘Sekuru’ Makamanzi is a Zimbabwean mbira player and singer based in London, dedicated to honouring the rich musical traditions of his homeland.
