We all know the UK needs more affordable housing.... but how do we build the numbers we need, while also looking after our existing council homes? 🏗️ Here in Bristol we're part of a multi-faceted approach. Goram Homes unlocks council land for new homes - for market sale, social rent and shared ownership. 🏠 Sometimes these affordable homes are council homes. Sometimes, they're owned by housing associations. ✅ This balance means the council can use more of its budget to repair and update existing housing stock, while also getting new homes built for those who need them most. Cllr Barry Parsons visited One Lockleaze, where we've just completed our first council homes, to explain why this is so important: #AffordableHousing Bristol City Council

Another great example from council-owned housing company Goram Homes in delivering family homes for local people. Delivering 268 homes through a partnership with Vistry Group half the homes delivered will be affordable housing (social rent and shared ownership). A good demonstration of what one council-owned company can acheive. There are upto 200 council-owned housing companies - collectively with their shared ambitions and delivery they remain a big contributor and solution to the country’s housing challenges. With further support from Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government they can achieve much more and quicker, just a small example that the Housing & Development Network will be working on over the coming months.

Today we are proud to launch the Housing & Development Network, a membership group for Council-owned Housing Companies and Local Authorities that combines the existing Housing Company Forum and welcomes new members dedicated to supporting Council Housing Companies and Local Authorities in their mission to deliver more homes. Our goal is to inspire, empower, and connect these organisations through knowledge sharing, learning, and by fostering a strong supportive network of housing leaders. Over the coming months we will bring together a collaboration of experienced housing professionals and advisors to offer valuable support to Local Authorities and Housing Companies through a series of regional events, training online and in person meetings.
