With the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act coming into force on 26 October 2024, employers now face a legal duty to take proactive steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This marks a pivotal shift towards creating safer, more respectful work environments. The EHRC's 8-Step Guide to Preventing Sexual Harassment is an excellent starting point for ensuring compliance and fostering a culture of accountability. Here's a quick breakdown of the steps to consider: 1️⃣ Develop an effective anti-harassment policy: Does your policy address all forms of harassment, define sexual harassment with relevant examples, and outline clear reporting and disciplinary procedures? 2️⃣ Engage your staff: Use 1-2-1s, surveys, and open-door policies to ensure awareness of reporting mechanisms and policy expectations. 3️⃣ Assess and reduce risks: Have you considered workplace dynamics like power imbalances, lone working, or customer interactions that might heighten harassment risks? 4️⃣ Improve reporting: Do your workers feel comfortable reporting harassment, and are mechanisms like anonymous reporting in place? 5️⃣ Provide effective training: Training should be tailored, practical, and reinforced regularly to empower your team to recognise and address harassment. 6️⃣ Handle complaints appropriately: You must act swiftly, respecting confidentiality, and ensuring fair outcomes for all parties involved. 7️⃣ Address third-party harassment: Do you have clear processes for preventing and addressing harassment by customers, clients, or suppliers? 8️⃣ Monitor and evaluate: Use data, feedback, and lessons learned to refine your approach. 👉 What’s your organisation doing to manage this new legal duty?
