🌍 Sustainable cooling has the potential to radically reduce global emissions while improving livelihoods, health outcomes, and food security. ❄️ During last week's webinar for the launch of Energy Catalyst's latest report – Learning from innovative businesses in the sustainable cooling sector, featured enterprises showcased a wide array of technological innovations designed to address major global challenges like food insecurity, climate change, and economic instability. 💡 Here are the key reflections from panel moderator Mercy Rose, Energy 4 Impact: 🫰 Affordability Affordability represents one of the key barriers to adoption and growth in the sustainable cooling sector. To make sustainable cooling accessible and affordable, innovators must develop service models and financing mechanisms—from cooling-as-a-service to PAYGO and leasing solutions—that meet the needs of targeted end-users. ⚖️ De-Risking Ventures Emerging innovators encounter the significant hurdle of balancing low costs for end-users with high operational expenses. To bridge this gap until economies of scale are achieved, they require collaborative support from governments, development finance institutions, international organisations, and private sector partners to mitigate risks in their ventures. 🤝 Local Partnerships Investing in local partnerships is crucial for revolutionising the cooling sector. Energy Catalyst-backed innovators are at the forefront, forging strategic collaborations. For instance, Akreon (David Akraka) is testing mobile solar-powered cooling systems for vaccines with healthcare providers, while Hubl Logistics Ltd is working with Malawian farmer collectives to trial portable cooling pods for perishable goods. Local partners provide valuable insights, ensuring solutions meet community needs.
