‘Stone Cracker’ at Marchmont House by Charlie Poulson This artwork seen a whopping 35 tonnes of Doddington sandstone to be quarried locally and took two years in the planning and execution! After an 85cm hole was drilled straight through, the stone was then lifted and let down over a 4.5m sapling which had been planted the previous year. Hutton Stone Co Ltd is changing literally the face of extraction with is new drilling rig. With such efficient way of extracting, #sandstone in #scotland can start to compete with other continental stone, challenging there cost. By allowing more stone to be extracted, designing structure more efficiently using the right engineering skill, #stone can be again a commodity.

Structural stone, a decarbonisation solution? Five tonne blocks, giant cutting machines and the infectious enthusiasm of Pierre Bidaud. This is what greeted me on a tour of the The Stonemasonry Company Limited's workshop in Ketton. Pierre is an advocate of making much better use of structural stone, particularly the ‘unloved’ stone, that which doesn’t meet the aesthetic requirements for finishes but is perfectly functional – and often remarkably strong! Personally, I think some of the blemishes add a real character to the stone and it is richer for it. There is an attractive simplicity in using stone, particularly the idea that it can be taken from the earth and placed in a structure with the minimum of processing. At a time when it is nearly impossible to trace the provenance of the materials we use, this is an important consideration. Whilst it is an ancient material, the use of post-tensioning systems has unlocked applications that confound our natural understanding of it – you can see Pierre standing on some post tensioned stone beams below! PT allows you to do almost anything with stone; slabs, beams, cantilevers, gravity-defying stairs! Though there is certainly a middle ground, one where we make use of stone’s inherent compressive strength and embellish it only where required to deliver a sensible structure. Hybrid solutions that adopt vertical stone elements with either timber or efficient concrete slabs make intuitive sense to me, though of course, every project requires a detailed assessment. The economic case can also be made where subsequent finishes can be avoided, particularly facades where we increasingly seem to try to replicate the look and feel of natural stone at great expense and carbon cost. Pierre has many examples of modest buildings which adopt stone walls which serve as both façade and load-bearing structure, particularly in France. The Stone Masonry Company are also pioneering the use of cut stone blockwork, a very conventional form of construction, yet with a material that can offer a far more interesting surface with the occasional fossil in lieu of a smooth finish! I look forward to seeing how we can add this tool to Ramboll's decarbonisation toolbox – after all we will need every tool we have to meet the challenge of decarbonisation and this is one that I look forward to learning more about.    The Stone Masonry Company is a member of The Stone Collective, a group of companies advocating for load bearing stone as a building material.
