  • “How much is it going to cost?” When we hear this question, our answer is always the same: “Depends on what you want to build” We often take prospective customers or clients to something they are familiar with, when trying to identify approx costs of software e.g their home. If they were to turn their home into a skyscraper or add a swimming pool, what do they anticipate the cost would be? Using simple analogies is effective at giving perspective. Software is not as mysterious as it sounds. But to the non technical person it is often too technical to comprehend. Building software is no different to any other type of transaction. The bigger and more features the product has, the higher the cost. I know, I know, prospects or clients want specifics, numbers. “But how much will it cost” Often that is difficult to ascertain until more research or planning has taken place, BUT, previous experience guides us towards accurate ball park costings if being pressured for a figure.   • We have been talking to founders with early stage ideas. They all say the same thing. They have an audience ready to use their product if it were live today ( largely family and friends ). But are they willing to pay for it we asked? The hem’s and haw’s soon followed. Price point wasn't discussed. Our advice: Try to get a letter of engagement with an agreed price point. (Very useful to show investors or grant funders that you have paying customers waiting ). Would price deter people from purchasing your product? How much would they be willing to pay? Would they want a monthly cancel anytime arrangement?
