Cost effective tidal energy

About us

HydroWing Ltd is an exciting new business developing new technology for the exploitation of tidal energy on a commercial scale with a focus on efficiency and cost reduction. The company is undertaking a Concept and Feasibility Study on a novel invention for harnessing tidal energy. The Concept and Feasibility Study includes a techno-economic analysis of the innovation in the context of a commercial array to assess and challenge the effectiveness of the design process. The study is supported and funded by the European Regional Development Fund as part of the Cornwall Marine-I Marine Challenge Fund. The project has distinct work packages looking at all aspects of a commercial scale tidal array. The focus of the project is on a 30MW array but optimisation towards 100MW and 200MW commercial arrays will also be considered with a view to techno-economic scaling. While a basic concept has been developed it is important that other strategies are considered to determine if this is the most viable integration solution- this is analysed against a baseline case.

Great view and stunning weather over the Morlais tidal energy commercial demonstration zone for our Indonesian Delegation.

Today we had a fascinating visit to Anglesey from a senior Indonesian Delegation comprising senior management of Indonesian Power, a subsidiary of PLN, to view our operations at Morlais. The delegation visited the Tocardo workshops to see the iconic T1 and T2 turbines. These turbines have accumulated 55 running years and are the world's most proven and reliable turbines. We were also able to show off our new HydroWing development with the new and innovative twin rotor 2x 600kw T3 Turbines which will be installed at Morlais in Anglesey. HydroWing has been awarded 20MW of capacity in recent allocation round auctions. We were able to visit the world class Morlais substation, where Gareth Roberts of Morlais Menter Mon gave an excellent presentation of the Morlais Project. It made me very proud to be associated with this amazing project and that we can show the true potential and benefits of Tidal Power . Inyanga have entered into a Joint Study Development Agreement with PLN subsidiaries, to develop a 10 MW tidal project in East Nusa Tengarra. This will include site surveys, resource assessments and FEED studies. Tidal Energy is the perfect solution for remote island communities as it can provide base load and displace expensive and polluting diesel generators. Our turbines are fueled by the perpetual tides that surrounds these islands. I think it's fair to say our Indonesian Friends were suitably impressed by the Anglesey Energy Island, not least the massive socio-economic benefits that these innovative projects bring to the region. This technology can then be exported from Anglesey, worldwide to regions such as Indonesia.

The Sabella D10 turbine is the only grid connected tidal turbine in France and in fact in the European Union. Inyanga deployed the device in 2022 and since then the device has been producing steady power to the community on Ushant Island since. With the sad liquidation of Sabella our team at Inyanga-Tech SAS intervened with the support of the Brittany Region to take over the assett to prevent it becoming a stranded assett and to preserve this iconic device to continue clean, predicatble power production to the inhabitants of Ushant Island.

Both Osian, Richard and the T1 have safely made it to Ocean Energy Europe in Aviemore, where we will be hanging around at the Marine Energy Wales Stand. Unfortunately Diane got delayed by fog at Nantes, but she will arrive this morning in time to give her presentation tomorrow, updating the amazing progress Inyanga have made, including our technical advancements and project updates from Anglesey Morlais, Indonesia and Phillipines. Diane will also update on our recent takeover of the Sabella D10 and her amazing efforts to keep this iconic turbine operational. The D10 is currently providing green electrons to the island community at Ushant Island. Richard will be involved in a panel discussion this afternoon regarding direct drive versus gearbox, we will be arguing the case for direct drive. Both the T1 and the Sabella D10 are direct drive turbines and both have proven to be robust and reliable. Indeed the T1 has more running years than any tidal turbine ever produced, and is the inspiration for the design of our next generation commercial scale 600kw T3 turbine. We would be delighted to catch up during the event and explain more, so please come and see us at the Marine Energy Wales Stand

Inyanga Marine Energy Group takes over the first grid-connected tidal turbine in France- It has been announced that Inyanga Marine Energy Group is taking over the D10 tidal turbine in France. The D10 tidal turbine was the first grid-connected tidal turbine in France, initially deployed in 2015. It is located in the Fromveur Passage, off the coast of Brittany, and provides clean sustainable energy to the remote island of Ushant. The D10 turbine was previously owned by French company Sabella, which went into liquidation in January 2024. Inyanga Marine Energy Group have now secured permissions to operate the tidal turbine until August 2028. The Inyanga Marine Energy team, which is headquartered in the UK and has an office in Brittany in France, has managed all offshore operations at the D10 site since 2016. Diane Dhomé of Inyanga Marine Energy Group said: “All permitting for the D10 turbine has now been renewed. We really appreciate the great support our company received from the Brittany Region and the French Administration. We have a shared vision for the development of renewable tidal energy.” Since its launch in 2015, the D10 tidal turbine has undergone various efficiency improvements and the technology has been validated as well as proven to have no negative impact on the local marine environment. Laid on the seabed at a depth of 55 metres, the machine is 17 metres high and 10 metres in diameter and can deliver up to 250kW of clean electricity to Ushant island grid. It has been operating continuously since its last deployment, managed by Inyanga, in early 2022. Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, added: “We have been heavily involved in the offshore operations on the D10 for several years and we were saddened by the bankruptcy of Sabella. We are pleased that our takeover of the D10 tidal turbine has now been concluded by the courts and the new deeds are now being drawn up. The future is safeguarded for this iconic tidal turbine, which has enjoyed tremendous support from the local community. It is another exciting milestone for Inyanga Marine Energy Group as we move towards our ambition of being the world leader in tidal energy.” The Fromveur Passage (also known as St Vincent’s Channel) has the second strongest tidal current in France and is notorious amongst sailors for its violent currents.
