We compared Sentinel-2 imagery from pre-fire (Nov 28, 2024) and post-fire (Jan 12, 2025): Pre-Fire (Nov 28, 2024): Lush vegetation, no visible fire damage. Post-Fire (Jan 12, 2025): Extensive burn scars and severe vegetation loss, revealing the fire’s devastating reach.

We’ve been studying the California wildfire using Fire Information for Resource Management (FIRMS) fire points to understand its scale and timeline. While many know it was significant, few realize just how massive it was. In just six days, it devastated a huge area. It started on January 7, 2025, with 53 fire points detected. The fire escalated rapidly, peaking at 475 fire points on January 8. The intensity gradually declined—211 on January 9, 152 on January 10, and 177 on January 11. By January 12, the fire had largely subsided, with just 5 fire points remaining.
