I recently realised that in my four years as a geography student (many years ago) we never simply talked about the places we loved. Today, this seems to me to be a fundamental principle for being present, here, and relatively at home in life. In running IberiaTeacher I noticed how participants made relationships with their new places in Seville and Lisbon. Most formed deep connections with the sea, sun, homes, plazas, beaches, bars, cafes, rivers, people…pastries. Sadly, we are now closing IberiaTeacher, as the funding or appetite for working with Europe in this way has gone. I’m grateful to have guided 371 people on to the programme, giving them the opportunity to go to Spain and Portugal for three months to teach English. So as a way of closing it, I asked our alumni (and the IberiaTeacher team) to tell us what they love, miss or remember about these two amazing cities and places. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next, but it'll have to be something to do with finding a way to enjoy and be part of the places that make up our world. --- With alumni like: Priya Kaushal, Alice Gilby, Alfoncina Matungamire, Cristina Vargiu, Katie Thompson, Natalie Pencille, Andrea Mimini, Isla Neil, Maria Perego, Ambreen Masud, Aleksandra Mrowka, Rhian Smith, Danny Smith and others. And our excellent crew who I already miss working with: Third Sector International, Synopsis, Lee Townsend, Bruno Riobó Budiño, Irene Cortijo, Inês Araújo, Monika Wasik, Antonio Rosso, Fátima Gutiérrez. And the whole project benefited from the support or work of Robert Foster, Uday Thakkar and Luke James, Eloy Miranda Garcia and others. HT to Embercombe for the Spring reminder around knowing our place… Video also here: https://lnkd.in/eV2JszCU

Our final fantastic #Iberiateacher groups in Sevilla and Lisboa. Two common themes from the trusty timeline evaluation sessions. 1. Relationships -Windows into student's lives. Improving skills through teaching in different settings, e.g. in a messy kid's room. Managers and teaching mentors - perhaps more important than in other fields of work. Challenge of changing schedules and differing organisational style of Sevilla and Lisboa. -Making friends with flatmates. Being respectful with flatmates, not making best friends but making friends elsewhere (perhaps as a result). The smaller Turing groups were harder than bigger Erasmus ones in this respect and next time we would probably have more social events or nudges organised. -Random nights out or trips and new friends or people who accompany us somehow in our lives whether for a few hours or a lifetime. 2. The power of experiences again Worth repeating that for any social programme, there is a funding requirement and aims requirement to control the experience in some way to 'maximise outcomes/value'. The tricky balance is allowing for life to provide experiences that may (or may not) be needed! Feeling bored, feeling anxious about language, not getting on, not having exactly the same experiences as others, having a broken heart or a twisted ankle. This hasn't always been perfect but we are again proud of the extent to which IberiaTeacher has provided support, structure and focus for participants whilst very much giving freedom and trust in them and in life to work it's magic. Less control - or hopefully less mindless and heartless control - means we are more likely to be awed by life and trust. 3. Perception It's amazing how perceptions of the same or very similar things can instantly change from group to group. This has been a challenge on what parts of the programme needed changing to improve and what was simply the (still valuable) perspective of one or two people. Some of that can be accounted for by who participants are, where they are coming from historically and geographically, time, place and the moment. The rest is down to perception and the eyes or channels of consciousness we choose to operate from. #teflteacher #tefl

After a brief hiatus of creating and sharing lesson materials, I'd like to get the ball rolling again by sharing this C1+ listening/speaking lesson plan about quitting social media (ironically, by sharing it on social media 😂). January arrival for our groups in Sevilla and Lisboa. Tefl teaching can feel less glamorous in a cold flat not meant for the winter, in a slow start academy when King's day has just finished or in a quieter than expected Lisbon or Seville when the tourism has relented. But when there's marmalade oranges on the trees, mist off the river, quiet bars and cafes, and a chance to ease into the teaching then it's also one of the best times to begin! #teflteacher #tefl #paidinternship #iberiateacher Synopsis Third Sector International And applications for our April to July group are now open.

Alumni stories: Dexter - Lisbon - April-July 2023 "I wanted to tell you that today i am processing the visa application for a job with Berlitz Asia (headquartered in Bangkok which covers operations for Thailand, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan). I would like to commend you for you doing an incredible job with the Iberian teacher, it was a wonderful experience, that ran very smoothly and your host partners were incredible. Once again thank you for the opportunity a few months back, I’m not sure I would have been here today without it." #iberiateacher #teflteacher #turing #paidinternship #tesol 👏#bravo #awesomeparticipants Synopsis
