A recent study addresses the need for unsupervised medical concept annotation to overcome the limited availability of annotated clinical data due to sensitivity and time constraints. The study, which used an unsupervised SapBERT-based bi-encoder model to analyze n-grams from narrative text and measure their similarity to #SNOMEDCT concepts, concluded that the approach demonstrates potential for initial annotation (pre-labeling) in manual annotation tasks. While promising for certain semantic tags, the study says, challenges remain, including false positives, contextual errors, and variability of clinical language, requiring further fine-tuning. SNOMED International's Award for Excellence is awarded to a single recipient each year for outstanding contributions to the improvement of #SNOMEDCT and/or its successful implementation in any aspect of health and social care. This year, at #SCTExpo24 in Seoul, the organization recognized Dr Hyeoun-Ae Park, who has pioneered efforts to promote and implement #SNOMEDCT in South Korea. Dr Park, who played an instrumental role in enabling Korea to host this year’s event, also has a long history of collaborating with key stakeholders and organizations globally and furthering research in the application of SNOMED CT to support semantic #interoperability and clinical research in Korean medical institutions.

SNOMED International’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals for sustained, outstanding contributions in the development or promotion of #SNOMEDCT and for global leadership in the terminology field. At #SCTExpo24 in Seoul, the organization recognized as this year’s award winner Dr. Md. Khadzir Sheikh Ahmad, former Deputy Director, Health Informatics Centre, Ministry of Health, Malaysia, for his role in strategically coordinating and executing the implementation of semantic standards in the Malaysian healthcare system. Dr Khadzir also established the foundation for Health Informatics Center as the National Release Centre for #SNOMEDCT as well as for other standards. After Malaysia became a SNOMED International Member in 2012, he promoted the use of SNOMED CT in other Member countries and generously shared with new SNOMED International Members Malaysia’s journey and lessons learned. Dr. Khadzir’s visionary outlook in promoting the use of SNOMED CT not only fosters collaboration and #interoperability, but has opened a new chapter in healthcare data analytics both in Malaysia and internationally.
