US Tariffs and the responses (counter-tariffs) to them are affecting businesses as they figure out how to work around them. But it isn't just prices that will go up. Entire sourcing departments are working overtime in concert with their engineers to re-spec and re-source key material inputs. Surprise obsolescence or interruption of components can devastate a business. We explored this issue just last year in our publication on supply-side obsolescence here: https://lnkd.in/gJ-WaQKN IIOM (International Institute of Obsolescence Management) Peter Ralston Matt Schwieterman

Your silos are killing your obsolescence strategy! or why talking with each other can create miracles. Five teams, one obsolescence headache: Why engineering, procurement, finance, project leads, and sourcing need to stop playing telephone. The ugly truth about obsolescence management? It's not a technical problem, it's a people problem. Every day I watch companies where engineering flags risks nobody hears, procurement makes panic buys finance hates, project leads miss deadlines because of parts, sourcing scrambles for alternatives, and finance wonders why nobody follows the budget. Sound familiar? Here's what cross-functional obsolescence management really looks like: → Engineering knowing component lifecycles but sourcing controlling supplier relationships → Sourcing finding alternatives but procurement controlling purchase orders → Procurement negotiating terms but finance controlling the purse strings → Finance wanting cost controls but project leads fighting for schedules → Project leads demanding timelines but engineering holding technical requirements The disconnects are costing you lots of dineros in emergency purchases, production delays, and compliance nightmares. Hard truth: You don't have five obsolescence problems. You have ONE problem viewed from five different offices. What actually works: Shared dashboards everyone can access (yes, even finance needs component lifecycle data!) Cross-functional obsolescence teams with decision authority (not just another pointless meeting) Joint KPIs that align incentives (when sourcing's bonus depends on project delivery, magic happens) Integrated systems where your PLM talks to your ERP (stop making people manually reenter data!) Weekly war rooms where project leads, sourcing, and engineering solve problems before procurement panic buys. I've seen companies cut emergency purchases by dou le digits just by breaking down these walls. The electronics sector has mastered this through necessity, when components disappear overnight, silos become luxury no one can afford. The companies winning at obsolescence management don't have better engineers or bigger budgets. They have teams that actually talk to each other. So which are you building: bridges between departments, or higher silos? ♻️ Repost if you're tired of obsolescence firefighting and ready for actual strategy! #ObsolescenceManagement #SupplyChain #CrossFunctionalTeams #EngineeringLeadership P.S. If your obsolescence meetings don't include finance, you're planning a party without knowing the budget. Good luck with that! P.P.S. Do you talk with other departments and exchange data?

Obsolescence Management: TheHidden Sustainability Champion Turn the Tide on E-Waste Through Smarter Planning We're drowning in e-waste. By 2030, the world is projected to generate 74 million metric tons of discarded electronics annually. But what if I told you there's a way to turn this tide? Enter Obsolescence Management, the secret weapon for sustainability. Let's break down how this practice isn't just about extending product lifecycles but actively saving the planet. 🔄 What's Obsolescence Management? It's the proactive strategy to anticipate, mitigate, and manage the risks of components, materials, or technologies becoming obsolete. Instead of discarding entire systems when a single part fails, this approach ensures we maximize utility while minimizing waste. Think of it as the "circular economy" in action. 🌱 How It Drives Sustainability Extending Product Lifespans By planning for obsolescence upfront, companies design products that are easier to repair, upgrade, or adapt. For example, legacy defense systems are kept operational for decades through smart component swaps, avoiding massive waste. Combatting Regulatory Shocks Regulations constantly phase out hazardous materials. Proactive obsolescence management identifies these shifts early, preventing last-minute scrapping of non-compliant products. Software & Lock-In Risks Ever heard of a 10-year-old CNC machine struggling to integrate with modern systems? Outdated software forces costly replacements. Obsolescence management ensures backward compatibility and open standards, reducing e-waste from "forced" upgrades. Proactive vs. Reactive Advanced forecasting tools predict component risks and monitor compliance globally. Switching from a reactive "replace-it-all" mindset to proactive planning slashes carbon footprints and resource extraction. 🚀 Real-World Impact Aviation: Replacing banned coatings required re-engineering, but early planning saved tons of scrapped aircraft parts. Rail Transport: Stockpiling processors for 20-year-old systems avoids costly reengineering and keeps trains running sustainably. Smart Buildings: Avoiding vendor lock-in ensures buildings don't become e-waste graveyards when a tech provider disappears. Adopting obsolescence management isn't just about cost savings, it's a moral imperative. By embedding it into design phases, leveraging standards like IEC62402, and using smart tools, we can: ✅ Reduce e-waste mountains ✅ Slash raw material consumption ✅ Meet global compliance before it's a crisis 🌏 Let's Rewrite the Narrative The next time you hear "innovation," remember: true progress isn't just about what's new, it's about making the old last longer. Share this post if you believe sustainability starts with smarter lifecycle planning! P.S. Want to dive deeper? Industry-standard frameworks like IEC62402 are a great guidline. #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #ObsolescenceManagement #Innovation
