Helping cities and other urban areas become healthier places for everyone to live. Part of Guy's & St Thomas' Foundation
About us
We are Impact on Urban Health. We focus on improving health in inner-city areas. The places that we grow up, live and work impact how healthy we are. And where we work in London, like many other cities, is home to the best and worst health – often side by side. Through our work, we challenge health inequalities and help urban areas become healthier places for everyone to live. Formerly Guy's and St Thomas' Charity.

How can we develop a funding decision pathway that is intrinsically and meaningfully participatory? This question was at the heart of a full-day workshop we held last week as part of Doing Social's Transformative Participation in Practice (TPP) project* with Impact on Urban Health (IoUH) – part of our wider Strategic Learning Partnership (SLP). We gathered with nine IoUH colleagues (including three senior leaders) and nine leaders of community organisations from the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark to reflect on how we make funding decisions for health equity more equitable by co-creating funding processes that are valuable in the very experience and transformative benefits they offer participants, organisations, and communities. We’re taking a holistic, emergent, and learning approach in shaping an experiential process for co-creating a new participatory funding decision pathway at IoUH that's aligned with social justice principles. During the workshop, we explored three themes: participatory processes, transformative outcomes, and the funding pathway as an inclusive innovation. The day was filled with honest, candid discussions, powerful reflections, as well as moments of shared laughter (which is so important when navigating messy systemic challenges). The next steps for us at Doing Social (DS) are to analyse the insights from this workshop as well as from an initial baseline assessment we carried out with IoUH colleagues in Sept-Oct, reflecting also on other data, existing structures/systems, and best practice. We’ll then compile draft proposals for the experiential and transformative process to co-create IoUH's participatory funding decision pathway, which will be critically reviewed by several workshop participants and colleagues early in the New Year before it's presented to the board. I just want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to community partners and IoUH colleagues for generously sharing your insights and energy (it was an intense day!), as well as to my wonderful DS colleagues Tyler Fox and Claire Hill-Dixon for such thoughtful facilitation and support, and to Gabrielle Allen at IoUH for being a brilliant colleague to collaborate with! *It's worth noting that the TPP project emerged organically through iterative discussions and growing trust between partners. This emergent approach has allowed us to shape something more nuanced and considered than if we'd tried to plan everything from the start. For genuine participation to work, these elements will need to continue to guide us. At DS, we believe in working "at the speed of emergence" - where the process itself is patient, kind, and intrinsically transformative. This is how we'll create the conditions for meaningful change, and this is what we'll bring to the next stage of this important work. #EmergentStrategy #ParticipatoryFunding #TransformativeParticipation #InclusiveInnovation #CapabilityApproach #HealthEquity #AgenticCapabilities

Delighted to see Impact on Urban Health's work covered in Forbes this week. Delivery trucks devastate people's health and are a huge burden on the economy. With emissions set to drastically rise throughout #BlackFriday, we wanted to share our vision for low-carbon, low-pollution urban areas. https://lnkd.in/eHnraXZT

All children should have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of where they grow up. Good nutrition and health in the very early years play a crucial role in a child’s development and growth and can also contribute to better child health. Key to this is making sure parents can adequately feed their babies, however they choose to do so. Impact on Urban Health commissioned Bremner & Co to conduct a comprehensive landscape review of breastfeeding in England, aiming to: 📰 Provide an up-to-date picture of current policy and practice ❌ Identify barriers to breastfeeding 💪 Explore levers of influence Thanks to Bremner & Co and all those working in and around breastfeeding who contributed to this report. https://lnkd.in/eZrRbWbQ
