Deloitte’s 2024 Disability Inclusion at Work: A Global Outlook provides important insights into the barriers and opportunities for disability inclusion in workplaces globally. The survey of 10,000 people with disabilities, chronic health conditions, or neurodivergence highlights the need for organisations to prioritise accessibility, inclusive practices, and support for employees. Key findings: 🔴 Disclosure and Adjustment Requests 88% of respondents disclosed their condition, yet three-quarters have not requested workplace adjustments due to fear of stigma, past negative experiences, or low expectations. Almost 75% of those who requested adjustments had at least one rejected, often over cost concerns. 🔴 Non-Inclusive Behaviours 40% reported experiencing microaggressions, bullying, or harassment in the past year, highlighting the need for cultural change. 🔴 Enabling Inclusion Respondents suggested enhancing physical accessibility (24%), prioritising inclusion at the leadership level (16%), and improving access to adjustments (10%). Addison Barnett, Director of Impact at Inclusive Employers, commented: "As awareness of disability and ableism increases, and particularly as more adults realise they are neurodivergent, we're seeing increasing requests not just for reasonable adjustments but for genuine inclusion of disabled people in the workplace. Many organisations are lagging behind, and line managers often don't feel equipped to have quality conversations about how to ensure their team can truly thrive. With Disability Pay Gap reporting on the horizon in the UK and increasing demand for genuinely accessible workplaces, I&D and People Professionals have a clear mandate to make genuine change via disability-inclusive policies, practices and upskilling for line managers." A recent report from the Women and Equalities Committee in Parliament reveals that women and girls in England often suffer for years due to reproductive health conditions being dismissed as "medical misogyny." Conditions such as endometriosis and adenomyosis are frequently underdiagnosed and poorly treated, stemming from widespread stigma and insufficient education among healthcare professionals. Symptoms are commonly dismissed as normal, resulting in delayed diagnoses and treatments that significantly impact women's education, careers, relationships, and fertility. Recommendations from the report include: 🔴 Clause 26 of the Employment Rights Bill should be amended to make clear that supporting women with reproductive health conditions falls under the definition of advancing gender equality. 🔴 Workplace support - ideally incentivised by the Government, workplaces should have strategies in place to support women experiencing reproductive ill health. The availability of flexible working patterns, a workplace that provides easy access to period products, and time off to attend appointments are just some of the measures that can better support women at work. 🔴 Across all sectors and employers, there should be a consistent approach to policies such as paid leave for fertility treatment, pregnancy loss, menopause symptoms, and menstruation-related issues. Talk to us about how Inclusive Employers can support your organisation to stay ahead of these developments: https://hubs.ly/Q0301JT-0

Organisations that embrace inclusive leadership and rethink their policies will be better positioned to succeed in the future. Increasingly, we’re seeing top talent scrutinising organisational policies, practices and results in inclusion when they’re considering whether to join an organisation. By adopting a proactive, inclusive approach, your organisations will be prepared to thrive in an evolving landscape, including attracting and retaining top talent. Key inclusion priorities for 2025 🔴 Addressing legal changes with an inclusion lens Before the Employment Rights Bill begins to move through Parliament, we have already seen the new sexual harassment law changes from October 2024 and upcoming Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act. These changes need a proactive response from all organisations, and both changes offer opportunities for embedding inclusion. 🔴 Harnessing the power of diversity data With ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting to become mandatory for organisations with over 250 staff, organisations must prepare now to collect and use meaningful data. For many, the journey starts with addressing gaps in data collection and overcoming barriers of mistrust. 🔴 Responding to division and conflict in the workplace As global political tensions rise, workplaces are increasingly becoming sites for societal divisions. Unaddressed, these tensions can harm psychological safety, disrupt collaboration, and erode trust. 🔴 Preparing for long-term employment law changes Future laws, like the expected Employment Rights Bill, show that organisations need to plan ahead for policy development.
