ISA is proud to highlight Hemisphere Education and Yasmina Koné's keynote presentation at our recent Autumn Study Conference, focusing on inclusion in education. Their session challenged senior leaders to consider how racial inclusion can be prioritised in teaching and learning, and how we can better prepare students for a diverse world. Hemisphere shared valuable insights from their research on children's experiences from various ethnic backgrounds and emphasised the importance of creating safe, inclusive environments for all students.
This morning we were delighted to give a keynote speech at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Autumn Study Conference. Our session focused on the importance of racial inclusion for all pupils. We invited senior leaders to explore several questions including: is racial inclusion a teaching and learning priority? What percentage of your staff would appreciate support to feel more comfortable discussing race or racism openly and honestly at school? Are you preparing your students for a diverse, multicultural world? We shared insights from Hemisphere’s original research into the UK school experiences of children from different ethnic backgrounds, alongside lessons from neuroscience and trauma-informed practice, to demonstrate how racial inclusion directly influences every student’s learning experiences, both at school and in wider society. "Hemisphere’s research is cutting edge and of the highest standard. Engaging with the team has helped deliver transformative change.” Fabian de Fabiani, Senior Assistant Headteacher, Townley Grammar School We look forward to continuing to work with ISA schools to create safe, happy school environments where everyone – teachers and pupils alike – can thrive. A special thank you to Rudolf Eliott Lockhart and Alice Thompson for the invitation. We’ll see you at the next conference! Thank you to all who attended our autumn conference #ISA2024ASC, which brought warmth and light to the colder and shorter days. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of our awards, and good luck to everyone entering next year. A special thank you to the keynote speakers, all of whom provided pause for thought and added to the plurality of educational debate by talking about some pertinent issues. These included Liz Robinson of Big Education who spoke about bold and vulnerable leadership. Yasmina Koné of Hemisphere Education addressed the issue of racial literacy. Jake Saunders (he/him) of Tender acted out how drama can help deliver a meaningful message in developing positive relationships from a young age and how to identify some behavioural ‘red flags’. On Friday, Abdul Chohan of Showbie spoke eloquently about making education fit for purpose in the third decade of the 21st century, and harnessing the power of tech in the ‘DNA of learning’. Kathy Potter of Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP brought matters back down to earth with some invaluable advice on the pressing matter of preparing to register for VAT. And whilst on this topic, please, if you are able, call upon the expertise of ISBA for any questions you have on VAT. Laura Knight of Sapio Ltd. applied her intelligence to help us harness the multifarious possibilities of the artificial kind. Richard Dunne of The Harmony Project implored us to bring nature-based education and sustainability into the heart of learning. And, finally, Andrew Hampton FRSA of Girls on Board Net, and ISA stalwart, talked about some of the challenging behaviours of boys and how girls can be helped to navigate some of the choppier waters they encounter in their friendships as they progress through school. A big thank you to all these people for enlightening us and to you all once again for attending. In these challenging times for the independent sector, it is gratifying to see so many members coming together and contributing to the educational debate, swapping ideas, and supporting each other. As always, the team at ISA HQ is here to help and advise.
