  • We are delighted to welcome Iona Brandt to Indigo. She will be working primarily with Mark and Mary on the planning and assessment side of the business but will also have the opportunity to work alongside and learn from the rest of the team on more design based projects. Iona has recently completed her Landscape Architecture MA at Sheffield University and has practical experience of working and volunteering in various landscape and horticultural roles. She also has a degree in Spanish Language and Literature and she has travelled to Argentina, working as a mountain guide, leading nature and wildlife treks. She is a great addition to the team and we are excited to have her on board at a time when we have a wide range of interesting projects underway and in the pipeline.

Planning Permission in New Forest National Park   We are delighted to announce that planning permission has been granted for our project for a replacement dwelling near Fordingbridge, in the New Forest National Park. Our Clients approached us having viewed a previous completed project of ours, which was for sale. We helped our Clients during their property search, ruling out two other houses before settling on this site. The brief was for a low energy, low maintenance, single storey dwelling of understated contemporary design, which nestles comfortably within the verdant forest setting.   Working closely with Scott Planning, we put together an experienced consultant team to ensure a smooth pre-application and planning application with New Forest National Park Authority.     The design concept positions the 320sq.m replacement dwelling further north and west on the site (compared to the existing dwelling), so as to take advantage of the southerly aspect on to the main open area of the garden, to ensure the new dwelling benefits from controlled passive solar gains whilst enjoying views across the garden and longer views of the boundary foliage and woodland beyond, from the living spaces. Setting the dwelling further back from the road also improves its privacy. A meadow and wildlife pond to the north will enhance the site’s biodiversity.     The accommodation is arranged with circulation around a central courtyard, living spaces facing south and bedrooms to the north. The simple form includes three pitched roof volumes, including two outbuildings. These are clad in black timber and finished with black zinc roofs. The flat roofed element is clad in natural timber, with a generous canopy to the west and brise soleil to the south.   It has been a pleasure working with our Clients, who have instilled their trust in us to get to this point. We now look forward to working through the detailed and technical stages and to seeing the project through construction.   Please keep an eye out for future posts where we will share more updates as the project progresses. • We are delighted to have received planning approval for a new contemporary, barn style home in a rural setting close to the village of Lockerley near Romsey. Initially called in to assist when the project hit problems at the pre-application stage, Indigo provided advice on the character of the landscape and the nature of built form that would be acceptable in this sensitive landscape setting, and then prepared a Landscape and Visual Appraisal and landscape masterplan to assist the with the planning application. Working with Western Design Architects and Atlas Planning, issues associated with the impacts on a Public Right of Way running through the site were also resolved, resulting in a positive planning outcome at the end of January. Naturally our clients were very pleased and were happy to share some feedback on their experience of working with us. “We were recommended to use Indigo Landscape Architects when we ran into difficulties with our planning application, with regard to the visual impact on the landscape and issues around a public footpath running along our land. The Indigo team were invaluable in their support and were able to help us to secure full planning permission in the end. As well as providing very detailed landscape visual impact assessments and landscape design, they attended meetings with us and the council, and their calm and considered professional approach was extremely helpful.”

  • Many thanks to all our fantastic clients and co-consultants. We look forward to working with you in 2024. This year we have again given a donation to the World Land Trust, to support their conservation work, and we continue to work with them to offset our carbon emissions. The office will be closed from midday on Friday 22nd December until 8:30am on Tuesday 2nd January.
