Antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) is not just a human health issue — it’s a One Health challenge that impacts humans, animals, and the environment. From the improper disposal of antibiotics to environmental contamination, AMR affects the ecosystems we all share. Today’s focus is on the importance of accurate allergy information when prescribing antibiotics. The current reported penicillin allergy rate within UK hospitals is between 10-20%. Approximately 90% of these patients do not have a true penicillin allergy. An incorrect allergy label can lead to wrong treatments, such as unnecessary antibiotics or alternatives that may not be as effective. This can contribute to antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) and put patients at risk. Here’s how we can make a difference: ✅ Ensure that allergy assessments are thorough and up-to-date to avoid mistakes. ✅ Make sure allergy information is recorded clearly so future treatments can be based on the right data. ✅ Talk to patients about their allergies to make sure all information is accurate and complete. By making sure allergy information is accurate, we help reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and fight AMR.
