Much has been made over China’s efforts to dominate the AI industry, but it may be more difficult for the county to get there due to its predilection toward IP theft. Under the Biden administration, US semiconductor manufacturing equipment makers were forbidden from selling or servicing the tools that develop and manufacture chips necessary to run AI platforms. Companies that make the chips are also forbidden from selling them the chips. But two European companies, ASML and KLA have quietly shut down their China operations as well over IP theft. That puts a huge dent in the countries ability to move their AI program forward. Quantum computing could potentially break current encryption methods, leading to a surge in research into quantum-safe cryptography.  Organizations are preparing for post-quantum cryptography to protect their data from future quantum-powered attacks.  But quantum computers take an enormous amount of power to perform the expected tasks.  Is it even physically possible to meet those expectations? Lou Covey, chief editor of Cyber Protection Magazine, has his doubts. And it isn’t just about power needs for quantum decryption.   Socioeconomic factors come into play including whether the nation-states most likely to deploy systems for malignant purposes will be in existence by the time the technology is available, and the sheer cost of producing a quantum computer powerful enough to do the job. All this demonstrates how the cybersecurity industry’s reliance on fear, uncertainty and doubt for marketing policy may have run its course and something else… like maybe truth, is a better direction.
